2006 ram 5.7 idle problems

started my ram and brought up the rpm to 4000 to warm it up. after about a min the rpm dropped to under 1000 even though I didn't release the gas and would not take the gas. I then shutoff the truck and waited about a min and restarted and all was ok. I am going hunting and don't want to be stuck. any suggestions?
