Tire wear....

Asked by wingnutbrill Mar 16, 2011 at 12:38 AM about the 2001 Dodge RAM 3500 ST LB 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Dodge 3500 dually with a dump box on it.  55,000 miles.  Diesel.  I am unusual tire wear.  The inside front left and the outside front right is wearing.  Everything on the front suspension has been replaced.  It's been to one dealership and 2 small shops and nobody can figure out what is wrong with it.  It also has been on 3 different front end alignment machines.  Anybody have a thought on this?  Thanx!

the only thing i can thing that it is, is the fact that its nearly impossible to keep a 94-02 rams front end aligned, as you go over bumps the cycling of the front suspension is constantly knocking things out of alignment, the only way to adequately fix the problem is to convert the trucks frontend up to an 07 steering system. i had a 96 ram 1500 4x4 and id get cupped tires, bad wear on the inside on the right and bad wear on the outside of the left. i replaced my wheel bearings and ball joints as well as my steering box and all steering components and that helped for a while id say 20,000 miles but all the funky wear came back after that. now i have an 04.5 ram 3500 diesel single wheel and the only wear my tires get is on the insides

I had a similar problem with My truck, I would get wear and the passenger side front wheel would hop on a section of I-10 west of Phoenix. I replaced all upper and lower ball joints, the steering stabilizer, the shocks, one tie rod end and all the wheel bearings, i may have more on the list but its a$2500 dollar investment. The previous owner used it to plow snow. I can confidently say that I can maintain the alignment, there's no wheel hopping, or cupping and new tires can make a difference too. I used Moog parts. The only other option you have is to put the truck on a frame machine at a body shop maybe the frame is twisted or diamond shaped, have you every overloaded the dump? I hope this helps, your load and your spine will thank you.

I have a '98 dodge 3500 diesel My tires were warning on the inside both sides ball joints were bad both sides, changed them .Found out that you can tilt the top of tire 3/4 of an inch, upper control arm has alinment bolts on top,but it won't stay there when you alinment is done and you drive for a while it starts to tilt back in to frame, need a washer on top of alinment nut big enough so it can't move back tord frame.
