Fuel ventilation "canister"

I own a 2008 Chevrolet Impala. The ventilation "canister" which allows the fuel system to "breathe" has clogged up twice now. Had it replaced once, by the dealer, who we purchased it from. Since then, it has done it again. The problem is, when you fill up at the gas station, the pump keeps shutting off every gallon or so, making it an extremely long and arduous process. First time it cost me $ 350 to get it fixed. Now I just deal with the issue. Why can't we bypass this system with a cheaper alternative repair?

The solenoid inside the canister that makes the vent open is probably being affected by some sort of electrical problem. There are ways to bypass the system but your check engine light would turn on and your car would leak fuel fumes.
The check engine light is on ALL THE TIME. After I had this fixed the first time, I asked the mechanic, "what is the worst thing that could happen if I don't take care of this?" He said that the fuel tank could collapse without the ventilation system working corrrectly. Its been this way for at least 40,000 miles and that hasn't happened yet. It's just a total pain in the A** to fill up with gas because the fuel pump keeps shutting off. Takes 15-20 minutes to fill up the car with gas.
I would look into finding a new mechanic. I have never heard of a fuel tank collapsing and some mechanics have allot to do with mechanical problems... *Hint*Hint* Just a guess. I've never heard of a fuel tank collapsing. Never.
I have a 2010 chevy impala lt. The yellow light is on but I have this problem with this gas leak but I replace the gas cap and I reset it but it still on so can you help me
I have this problem with this remote starter... When I try to starter the car with the remote starter the orange light flash but won't start and I check the fuses but everything ok and the car start with the key but not the remote start... It a 2010 chevy impala LT
@flipmode....The remote start will not work if your "check engine" light is on.
im having the same problem with my 2013 impala LTZ, when i fuel up its taking much longer to start up than usual, it started about a week ago and now my check engine light is on, any suggestions?
I have a 2013 impala and when I put gas in my car. it won't start right away. it usually takes about 2 tries but each one tries to crank over 6 times. then it finally starts. but rough idle for alittle while. any idea's what might cause this. I have been leaving it running while i'm filling up. then this doesn't happen.
for the fuel filling issue everything I'm finding out its the fuel tank pressure sensor, the part runs about 30 bucks, I don't when they took the access panel out of trunk, but with newer models( mines a 2012) you will have drop the tank to replace the sensor. the stuttering to start, I'm coming up with fuel pump, due to the fact the fuel filter is unserviceable on 3.6 direct inject motors
Access panels are in the 2000-2005 Impalas with the 3.4L V6 motors but I'm not sure about the 3.8L motors. If it has an access panel, you will find it under the carpet in the trunk behind the backseats, all you have to do is unscrew the bolts and pry the panel up. If it doesn't have the access panel, you will need to drop the gas tank to replace the fuel pressure sensor, which will be located on top of the fuel tank.
I found the access panel in the trunk. Is the fuel tank pressure sensor easy to replace?
mines an 08 can I reach it from my trunk? and on diagnostic it says gross evaporated leak. chk engine light is on.
I had an 05 that did the same thing I finally sold it and bought a 2011 and it does it too. If you want an Impala it's just something you have to live with.
It's your canister vent valve..cheap (about 50 bucks ) located by back bumper..replaced mine and engine lights out now ( after reset..disconnect battery cable and reinstall )
Replace the canister vent valve for those who have a massive evap leak code..part is cheap (50 bucks ) solved my problem.
I have 2004 Chevy impala check engine,change oil light, low fuel light stays on,my gas needle doesn't work and it hard to put gas in the tank or where. I am at on gas,it a pain at the pump to put gas in my car. Any solution to this problems anyone. I looking for answers too
I have 2004 chevolet impala with the exact same problems as yours identical. My car is a pain in butt at the gas pump and I have check engine light,low tire pressure,low fuel light flashing on all the time. My horn won't work, I made a Toggler switch work for awhile now that stop. I looking for the same answers as you cause we have the same problems.
If you have a later model GM and you either have consistent lean codes - and do not have a vacuum leak - or you have either a stall or hard start after filling up, replace the EVAP purge solenoid. These solenoids are known to have an issue where they do not close properly. When this happens, either fuel vapor is drawn into the engine when the PCM is not expecting it (hard start or stall after filling) or will cause the engine to run lean when the tank starts to get low on fuel (no fuel vapor in the charcoal canister, so no extra fuel in the engine - just extra air) Purge solenoid is only around $35-$50 from GM and takes less than 10 minutes to replace in your driveway. Do yourself a favor and do NOT use an aftermarket part.
I have a 2010 impala, needing a plan on how to replace the evap charcoal canister. It looks to be setting on the fuel tank. Any suggestions , would like to do the repair myself.
Check the plug on your canister vent valve. I replaced the whole evap system on a 2013 impala just to find out the hot wire going back to the vent had a loose connection, allowing the valve to stay open, causing it to clog up. Soldered on a new plug and its went from a 20 minute fill up to a 2 minute fill up. Hopefully this helps somebody, because I wasted a lot of time and money for a loose wire.
