engine hot ac off

my car barely started after getting off work coming home and going to the
grocery store engine hot ac off came up and after finally starting temp gage
stayed on c but my fans came on and kept on going what is really going on

two things bad thermostat or the coolant temperature sensor is about 100 dollars fix if you do it yourself
