4 wheel drive

I have a 2008 ford escape its says 4 wheel drive on
my rear lift gate. I tried the 4 wheel drive but
there's no light or switch to turn that indicates the
4 wheel drive is ingaged. It says in the hand book
that the 4wd is automatic. There's no human
involvement at all. Don't understand.

We have a 2018 4x4 Escape. You do nothing to turn the four wheel drive on.
