4 Wheel Drive

Asked by cgthome Feb 04, 2014 at 09:47 AM about the 2011 Ford Escape XLT AWD

Question type: General

The dealer tells me that my 2011 Ford Escape is a 4 wheel drive vehicle.  I do not have any buttons to turn the 4 wheel drive on and off and there is no 4x4 emblem on the car. Do I really have 4 wheel drive?

I'm pretty sure your Ford Escape is full time All Wheel Drive. Therefore no need to engage anything as your car will automatically transfer power to different wheels depending on road conditions.

If you want to make sure, just go the the rear of the Escape and look underneath. If you see a differential and a drive shaft going to each wheel you have All Wheel Drive. If you do not see these you do not.

When I did my research about fords intelligent 4wd I was impressed. The system is always in front wheel drive mode so the it is fuel saving, the moment a tire slips or loses traction, the computer activates the 4wd. It's really neat, I've seen a couple of videos online of an escape slipping in mud with the front wheels only moving then seconds later all 4 wheels are going.

It does not appear as if this one is all wheel drive.

I had the same problem with my 2012 Ford Escape xlt if it doesn't have 4x4 on the car and there is no notification on the dash the your intelligent 4x4 is in you most likely have an awd of fwd when I found out I didn't have 4x4 I looked under my car and I have rear differentials and rear axels so I have an awd... Which sucks because I tow boats and jetskiies for a living and I can tow some boats so I'm loosing money!

Does my 2012 Ford escape xlt look to you like it has 4 wheel drive? I need help with this please!

"Performance & mpg: The Escape Hybrid power plant consists of a 2.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and two electric motor/generators. Net output is 155 hp. Ford calls the transmission a CVT, but there's no rotating belt as in a conventional CVT. Instead, the motors work in concert with the gas engine through a planetary gearset to provide seamless power and maximum efficiency. If you're the driver of an Escape Hybrid, all you have to do is move the shift lever to "D" and press the gas pedal. On AWD Escape Hybrid models, a third electric motor steps in to drive the rear wheels when extra acceleration or traction is needed. It's not a true all-wheel-drive system, though, and buyers needing a serious snow vehicle will be better served by the regular gasoline-powered Escape. With the EPA's adjusted fuel economy ratings for 2008, the front-drive Escape Hybrid comes in at 34 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, while the AWD version is listed at 29/27." - Edmunds website
