Engine Swap

Asked by GuruX3JK8 Nov 27, 2018 at 02:14 AM about the 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix that has 45,000 miles on the motor and transmission.  I flipped it 5 times, so the body is destroyed. I didn't have full coverage insurance so it is my loss. I want to get another car, same body, for a cheap price, maybe high miler. Drive it til the engine/transmission goes, and then switch mine over.  How can I tell which ones my engine will work in?  My husband says the last number of the Vin has to match? Is that true?  Does it have to be another 2008?

The 8th number of the vin is the engine, so you think you can wear out 2 engines in the same car? Engines easily go 150,000 miles or more.

Thanks. I've seen a 2007 with 160,000 miles on it for $2,000. So I thought why not get that one, drive it til the engine in it goes, and then switch it out for the engine in my car

I know this isn't what you asked, but unless you like having a destroyed car sitting in your yard for the next 5 years, why bother? For one thing swapping engines in modern cars is a pretty big project. By then the car will be five years older. Won't be worth spending any time or money on. I know it seems like a good idea, but in reality its a project that will never happen. Let the chinese melt the old one down and make rebar out of it and move on. Free advice... worth price paid.

Yea, that's what everybody keeps telling me, but I just can't do that lol And I definitely won't be another 5 years before I get a car. I'm looking at the next year tho.

I get that, but it will be 5 years after that before you need that engine. But if you’ve got the space to store the wrecked car it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t cost anything for it to sit there. Hope you won’t be walking for too long.
