Can a Key/Fob be locked inside a car?

Asked by GuruXB6XQ Oct 21, 2018 at 09:28 AM about the 2008 INFINITI QX56 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Is it possible to lock a key/fob inside the car?  I misplaced my key/fob and doors are locked.  I only have the one so I need to get a locksmith to open car if that is possible.  Otherwise what options are there to replace other than towing car to dealership and having them make me a new key/fob?

I managed to do it; the driver's door was locked. I opened the passenger door put my purse with my fob in - closed the door. it didn't close all the way but I couldn't open it. Went around to the driver's door and it was locked. My husband suggested I tried to close the 'ajar' door and see if it would unlock - the fob just beeped away in my purse. had to go and get the other fob, luckily we could do this.

I didn't think it was possible. I have a Qx56 and YES the doors locked with my key fob inside the vehicle. I had to call AAA to get my keys. This happened on 10/5/19, I was IRKED didn't think it could possibly happen, and it did.

Yes, exact same sequence as from guruhcrlh. Now keep the key in the gas filler compartment, separated from the fob.

I live in Baltimore. I don't recommend keeping the key in the gas filler compartment, car thieves know where to look and they don't miss a thing, maybe they miss their mommas when the cops catch them.

I locked the doors on my qx56 and didn’t realize my keys were inside until the next morning thinking that it wouldn’t be locked if the keys were inside but unfortunately the truck was locked!

Bit of a late comment. A friend had a similar problem last week and recommended me a good car locksmith. When she was locked out of her car before, they were supposed to break the car's window just to get in. Good thing, the locksmith is equipped enough to bypass lock and that saved the damage. For your keyfobs and keys, rekeying or repairing might also be a better option than having to buy a completely new one. Would highly recommend Sherlocks Locksmith if you live in New York. Hope this helps.

As far as leaving the key in the gas filler compartment, that will not work on my vehicle. Once the doors are LOCKED, the gas filler compartment LOCKS as well. The doors on the vehicle have to be UNLOCKED in order for the gas filler compartment door to open. If the doors are locked, so is the gas filler compartment door, therefore you will still be locked out of the vehicle. I have decided to place my keys on a hook and hook them to my clothes, in or out the vehicle the fob is on my person. No more lock out issues for me.

I just had this happen today. Well last night I should say. I didn’t realize I locked my keys in my car until I got up and tried to leave this morning. Called a locksmith paid the $95 and went on my way. I always keep my keys in my coat pocket and yesterday I gave them to my husband to drive somewhere and had forgot he set them inside the car on the floorboard ‍♀️

So disgusted! This morning, I put my purse and work bag in the truck with my keys in it. The doors locked when I reached for the handle. The dang thing beeped and still locked. Ugh! Thankfully, I was still home and my daughter was able to go inside and unlock the door using the spare key. Infiniti, please work on this feature.
