What is an insert and does it really cost $2k to replace?

So my Corolla(08) stopped while driving. I got a diagnostic
done and the mechanic says it needs a new insert and its
cheaper to replace the whole motor. Is this really a thing?

He might be referring to a cylinder repair sleeve, which would entail rebuilding the motor, often much more expensive than buying a remanufactured engine or finding a good used motor.
