Popping noise coming from transfer case while in awd

Transfer case is popping while in 4 wheel but it
does not pop while locked into 4 wheel high or low

What is the difference between being in 4WD high or low and being in 4 wheel? I don't think there is any such thing as 4 wheel that is not high or low.

It is a all time 4 wheel drive vehicle there are three setting 4wheel, 4wheel high lock, 4wheel low lock
