2008 Ford Explorer Transmission problem

I have a 2008 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 2wd. Truck was running fine. Parked
on a slight incline for a few hours. When I started the truck, the gear shifter
moved freely, but the gears would not engage.  Is my transmission shot?

How do I check the linkage? Does the transmission need to come out of the truck to do this?
