My parents are debating if I should get a convertible because of the insurance prices being too high, if I get a 2008 VW beetle convertible and I'm 16, will it really be that expensive? The car is used and it costs $7,000.

how about YOU pay for the insurance with the job that you have and then they wont need to worry about it -- ??
A convertible is more dangerous than a hardtop in an accident- if you are only 16, chances are you will have an accident or two before you turn 21- there were 35,000 traffic fatalities in the US last year- the New Beetle hardtop is an immensely safe car, I know from personal experience- I gave a red one to my daughter, and she walked away from one bad rear end collision (not her fault, guy plowed into her)- the Beetle was amazing- after it was repaired, she was hit from the side just ahead of the driver's door by a guy who blasted through a red light- that one totaled the car- I am so glad she was in her beetle- I hope you and your parents think about this: being out on the streets is NOT a game- put your daughter in the safest thing you can- and, NO, an SUV is not the safest vehicle
A convertible is NOT a wise choice for a 16 year old inexperienced driver...period. I'm surprised your parents are even debating about this! Get a hardtop Beetle with a sunroof and be happy with that...until you get old enough, logged in more driving hours AND can afford to call the shots on what car you buy.
You're 16...you get an 87 Ford Taurus and like it! NO CONVERTIBLE FOR YOU!!!
