There's nothing illegal in what happened to you. CarGurus is a listing website and does not control the pricing of any vehicles on the site. That is all set and controlled by the dealer selling the car. A lot of times, shady dealers will do exactly what you described. And the reason they do so is people will make the trip, then do not want to drive away empty handed just like you and will pay the extra thousands. The better bet would have been to vote with your wallet and given your business to a more reputable dealer willing to stand behind their pricing. The short version: If you want to complain about the price being off, point the finger at the dealer. If you are wondering why dealers are still pulling these stunts, point the finger at yourself.
