When you run a car out of gas you are sucking up every bit of debris out of the tank. You likely have a clogged fuel filter, if you are lucky! If not, you may have destroyed the fuel pump by driving the car low on gas all the time. A modern fuel injected car should never be below a quarter of a tank as the gas helps cool the pump.
