08 Liberty 3.7L Engine Knock

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So my check engine light came on and the code
was for a random misfire and cooling system. I
replaced the thermostat and was left with them
random misfire. I started it up and it sounded like I
had an exhaust leak followed by a loud knock top
end right in the center and my check engine light
flashed at me. I turned it off. So is my motor shot
or what?

A knocking engine is never ever good! Most likely it's a spun bearing or excessively worn bearing. Do you have poor oil pressure at idle with the engine warmed up? Coolant in the crankcase as evidenced by milky white goop on the oil dipstick? If so it's the kiss of death and, in my opinion, not worth fixing. The vehicle is 11 years old and sounds like it's at the end of it's life! Sorry!! Hope that helps! Jim

There is no milky substance in the oil. Coolant still green and no white smoke. I did find a small oil leak on the timing chain cover. It's still under warranty but I have to figure out how to get it to the dealer.

Hmmmm, inspect the timing chain cover more closely. The knock you're hearing may be the worn timing chain flopping around and hitting the inside of the cover. It happens from time to time. The oil leak may be from a small hole in the cover or distortion in the cover from the timing chain hitting the inside of the cover. Hope that helps! Jim
