Initially I thought it could be the catalytic converter, but the performance hasn't been
affected at all. Is it possible to have a bad O2 sensor and still get this code?

What is your recommendation as how to fix the problem? Should I replace the down stream O2 sensor?

Ok, so I'm guessing that maybe you would recommend replacing the converter?

I have a 2008 Chevy malibu LTZ 4 2.4 L the rpm gauge will ping to 4,000 rpm after driving at highway speeds for 5 to 10 minutes.
