Question type: Maintenance & Repair

just last week i drove up to Seattle washington from San Diego and back, about 2508 miles. on the way back i noticed that the fuel gauge along with the digital fuel guage were declining rapidly. After filling up the tank, without moving the vehicle, i would lose about a quarter tank of fuel. ive looked under the car for leaks( i found none), the fuel filter is dry and has no leaks and i cannot smell fuel in the engine compartment.

the sensor in the gas tank could b bad and just mis reading how much gas is in the car.... but if it is actually losing gas take it somewhere and have them check it out

Shop said its the FUEL PUMP MODULE which they don't fix there... And I'm assuming they mean the fuel pump itself. Is that hard to replace? Is there a site I can see info on how to?

Fuel pump module is located inside the fuel tank. To replace, the tank must be removed to access the module. Unless you're fairly experienced this is something best left to the pros. Wiring and plumbing have connectors that require special tools to unlock. However! Run the fuel tank down to almost empty before doing this. Your mechanic will definately appreciate it!

Thanks Mike. Mechanic said if I want him to do the work it would run me $700. He did however recommend that I take it to the dealership and have them do a goodwill fix since the car is fairly new and has less than 60K miles on it. So, cars headed to the dealership next week. Hopefully the work is covered under my warranty

I have an 08 Edge with 43K. We have an extended warranty since factory was only 3/36. Hope you have same! Good Luck and glad to help!

There must be a fault with the fuel systems on the edge. I am heading back to Virginia from Florida in a few days and with an average of 15 miles per gallon I dread the trip. Any ideas on how to get better millage. thanks

I have no idea how someone could charge $700 to replace the fuel pump module on a 2008 Ford Edge. Threre are 2 bolts and 2 nuts that hold the front of the back seats down. Remove them, fliup the seats up, hold them up with some zip ties/ Pull the carpet back. There is an access plate with for phillips head screws behind the driver's seat. Remove them. You are now looking at the top of the fuel pump module. Remove the fuel line, remove the electrical connector, remove the lock ring and out she comes. Removing the lock ring may require the use of a special tool (Ford Rotunda Tool Number 310-123) but it can be done without it, Install is reverse. Takes less than 10 minutes to remove. Job takes 30 minutes if you include tie to collect tools and clean up and that is not pushing it. Problem is this likely will not correct your problem. I just replaced my sending unit and it is still reading almost empty. The miles to empty has now creeped up to 32 from 8 after I filled up and drove it a ways. Still researching the cause but I do no think it is your sending unit. And yes, I do realize this is a 7 year old thread but I want to keep someone from replacing the sending unit when that is no their problem.
