With Engine OFF - Oil & Check Engine lights are on

Asked by Debra Dec 06, 2016 at 03:23 PM about the 2008 Toyota RAV4 Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Rav4 2008 has oil, runs smooth.  But upon turning the engine OFF the oil light and the check engine light are on - dim, but on.  Also, there's a faint humming coming from the engine - louder on the driver's side.
With the engine running - the Oil and Check Engine lights are both off  but the Maint Required light is on.

Sounds like a short. But, if you go to Jiffy Lube to get an oil change, they have an OBDII scanner, and they can plug it in to see if there is anything being recorded by your engine computer. They can tell you if there are any diagnostic codes coming up, and what they are. Kinda nice for a free opinion with the oil change.

I disconnected the battery to avoid running it down till I could get to a shop. That reset the computer and problem solved. Still had mechanic check it out. All good. And no charge. Whew!!

Your problem is water has got into the wiring junction box at passengers right foot. Remove the thumbscrew and remove the small panel...You will find that water has leaked onto this area . I think it is the bottom plug where the water is shorting 2 terminals and running something that sounds like a electric motor humming..It will run the batt down overnight. Unplug each plug and use air nozzle or hair dryer to dry each and every plug and buy some di electric grease( not regular grease) this will help keep out water in the future. Plug everything back in and you should be good. I cleaned all the leaves from around the wipers under hood etc. This got me going!!!!!

Phil is the man! Thanks. There is a wiring harness at the floor of the front passenger area (right side) which has gotten wet. Pull the plastic panels off and with the battery disconnected, carefully disconnect and thoroughly dry each of the connectors along with their respective sockets. Compressed air is helpful. Suggest also adding some dielectric grease when reconnecting

That seems to be the problem. Any idea how to keep the water out? Where it comes in from?

Our 08 had windshield replaced 5yrs ago. rt lower corner is our leak. Also clean out cowl screens and sunroof drains with compressed air. Rusty cowl seams and damaged cowl sealant also sources of front floor H2O.

Phil is the man for sure! I own a 2007 Rav 4 that has experienced this very problem and his diagnosis was spot on! I happen to be an electrician and unplugged all of the connectors, dried them with compressed air, added dielectric grease to all of them and plugged them back in. I took it a step further and wrapped the entire assembly in 3 mil plastic to prevent them from getting wet again. I also cleaned all of the debris including leaves and dirt from the cowl area on the passenger side and blew compressed air through the sunroof drain tube as well as it travels behind this electrical junction block as well. I hope this will help someone in the future!
