2008 Dodge Charger will NOT start! PLEASE HELP!!!
Asked by Supanovah May 31, 2011 at 09:47 AM about the 2008 Dodge Charger SE RWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Forgive me for being too descriptive or long winded but I wanted to make sure I provided as much information and detail as possible to make the diagnosis much easier.
I have a 2008 Dodge Charger 2.7L Engine and I’m experiencing TERRIBLE cranking/starting issues and NO ONE seems to be able to diagnose the issue! I’ve taken it to 3 mechanics now and I’m REALLY trying to avoid taking it to a Dealership (just too expensive for me right now).
Here’s a break down and time line of what I’ve experienced thus far (and notice the inconsistencies)
1. (few months ago) Instead of me turning the fob and the car starting instantly as normal, I had to hold the fob in the start position for an extended 3-4 seconds before it would start.
2. (weeks later) 3-4 seconds sometimes grew to 5-6 seconds before it started.
3. (couple months ago) It went away and began starting instantly again.
4. (weeks later) It went back to the 3-6 second delay again but would still start.
5. (a month ago) It began “trying” to crank (turn over) but wouldn’t start. It would do this 1-3 times and then finally start.
6. (one day) It cranked and cranked (the engine was turning) but would NOT start at all.
7. (next day) It tried to crank and finally started.
8. I took the car to Autozone and let them test the battery and starter. And EVERYTHING checked out fine!
9. (next day) I checked all the fuses relating to ignition and starter. No fuses were blown. Relays looked ok too. When I started up the car the check engine light FINALLY came on for the first time. I drove the car to Autozone and their computer gave error codes P0335 (Crankshaft Sensor Circuit) and P0340 (Camshaft Sensor Intermittent). The tech told me to hold off on buying the parts since one of them had to be ordered and we really wasn’t sure which needed to be replaced (trying to be as cost efficient as possible).
10. (two days later) After trying to crank the car (the engine did not turn at all), it finally started after 10 minutes of trying. I drove to work and when I got ready to go home the car would NOT crank or start AT ALL! I tried to crank it for 45 minutes. It would not crank (turn over) at all. I left the car at my job and returned 2 hours later and installed a new Camshaft Sensor. And it still did absolutely NOTHING. After trying to crank it for about 30 minutes, I left it and returned later that evening. It still would not crank. I tried everything but one thing….jump starting it. I KNEW this wouldn’t work but what did I have to lose? Put the cables on and within about 2-3 minutes it started! Drove straight to Autozone and had them test the battery and starter again and their computer once again said everything checked out good. They said the jumpstart was a coincidence.
11. (next day) took it to a local auto shop. They also told me jump starting it was a coincidence, however, they could not get it to crank. They tried the fob, a portable battery jumper, and then they rolled out a big truck battery with cables attached to it and unsuccessfully tried to jump it. Just as they were about to push the car into the work area I suggested jumping the car with “another running car.” After 2-3 minutes….it tried to crank once or twice and finally started. Coincidence? I don’t know…
12. (next day) the car would not crank or start. I attached the jumper cables and again after 2-3 minutes it started. This time the car cranked/started PERFECTLY for 2 days straight!
13. (today) the car will NOT crank nor start.
ANY AND ALL INFORMATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!! ANY SUGGESTIONS OR QUESTIONS PLEASE DON’T HESITATE TO POST! And I do mean “ANY!”
P.S.
Everything is STOCK. Stock radio, no amplifiers, no automatic starters, no added security systems, etc.

Ok for anyone who comes across this post with the same problem, I came back to post the resolution to my problem (I hate when people ask for help and never come back to update everyone so people with the same problem know what to do). Apparently the problem was the Starter Relay! The Starter Relay is located in the fuse box under the hood, in slot #9. If you try to buy it from a parts store they will have to order it, so go buy it from your local Dodge Dealership's Parts Center. The part# is 05269988AA The cost was $15.75 plus tax it was $16.86. Good Luck!

Hi. My '06 Charger is doing the exact same thing - just - not to that extreme. It has, however, over the past month progressively gotten worse. So - in a nutshell - I just wanted to say thank you SO MUCH for posting this article!! The local Dodge Dealership here makes the phrase "rip-off" seem like a bargain! Thanks again! :o)

Ok - long story short... After trying the starter relay out - that wasn't it. So with process of elimination - we were back at square 1. Took it to a mechanic which was a bit of help. He had 2 chargers before & his '08 had the same problem. He said if I have 2 keys - switch them out. I did this & it seemed to help. I haven't changed keys in over a week & I've literally been shoving the key into the ignition & it starts every time now. No telling when I'll be replacing that but this is so frustrating! Ughhh... So anyways - this is where were at so far. :o\
I have an 08 Charger and I've noticed a 2-3 second stall in starting for a little over a year. Come out one to start the car and nothing. I thought it was my starter. I found this info and went and purchased the starter relay just like the post said and my problem is now gone for $16.86. Thanks.
WHOEVER YOU ARE I WANNA THANKYOU VERY MUCH WAS SCARED TO TAKE MY CAR TO THE DEALER CAUSE I KNOW HOW THEY MAKE THEY MONEY I HAVE A FRIEND OF MINE WENT THRU THE SAME THING AND HE DIDNT KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS AND HE TOLD ME HE PAID $500 I CANT WAIT TO TELL HIM HE HAD BEEN GOT
Hollywood01 answered 13 years ago
Could you tell me which starter relay it is bc there's like 3 or 4 different 1's on this piece of crap. Mines an '06 base model. Thanks.
Single mother thanks you for the informative post. I was sitting here just feeling awful that my car wouldn't start. It is difficult to get a jump from people these days and very embarrassing. Thank you!
the starter relay was part of it . the rest goes like this , not only mopars have this problem . my 01 malibu has had the ignition switch replaced 3 times . twice at 300.00 and once at 100.00 . the 100.00 switch is made in mexico ,the 300.00 unit is GM and made God knows where. OK.. IF you ever have a key made that does NOT come from the dealer it has the chance of NOT having the magnetic chip in the club end . without this chip your ignition switch does not recognize the key even though the cut on the key is correct ! the security system thinks the car is getting stolen and cuts off the fuel pump .. SOMETIMES ,ie if the car was used with the wrong key it will start .. like if its stone cold (sat overnite) for a few times before the system initiates lockdown (won't start but cranks) it has something to do with wheather or not the chipless key was removed when it did start or if it was left in the ignition . either way the ultimate no win scenario is when you return to a warm vehicle with the chipless key and put it in the ignition . (crank won't start at all ) wait a while ,return , vehicle now cooled off , and it starts ! But did you see which key you used ? most people have two sets from the dealer and who knows how many from the hardware store . I think a solution would be to use only dealer made duplicate keys ? Any way my malibu would not start period until the whole switch assembly was replaced . and who was using hardware store made duplicate keys in my car ? My ex-wife and her boy friend while I was at work in my truck . why couldn't it have died with them instead of me ? (busted) anyway that answer took awhile to figure out but there it is ... happy motoring ...PBN

I had this same problem and took it to the dealership today. I told them there was a 5-6 second delay. When they tested it, it only did it for 2-3 seconds and they told me that was normal and go on. Well when I went to leave, I started my car and it took about 5 seconds for it to start. They gave me a form saying it was normal for it to do this and that if I turn the key slowly when I do it, then it would not have this problem. Well I tried turning the key slowly and it still did it. This will probably be the last dodge/chrysler that I ever buy.
Have you got your problem fixed. I just went rounds with my local dodge dealership over wich relay was the starter relay on my 08 charger. They insisted it was #33 and swap out with #37 wich was a spare. Well #33 was not a relay and #37 was a slot for a fuse that I do not even have. I tried explaining this to them and they insisted i was looking in the wrong box under the hood. I told them the power box under the hood only went to 22, they said i was wrong. They said it is labeled, it was not and they said i was wrong. I decided to do a little search on the internet and found several people had this problem and confusion with chrysler. A helpfull individual provided a diagram of his own and it turns out it is #9 in the power module under the hood, not the trunk. Switched out #9 and the car starts as if it did the day I drove it off the lot. Hope this helps.

Hey there!!! Thank you so much for your help! Actually - no. Its not fixed. There's still a delay. Also last Fri morning all of the gages were going off while I was driving. Turned out it was a dead battery. So we changed the battery - the delay started again but the gages stopped flashing. Im going to give your remedy a try. Its worth a shot. Thanks so much- Jami
We had the same problem. Got the part that goes in slot #9 and BAM no more delay! The guys at the dealership didnt think it would work and said we should get it checked out, well to there suprise we proved them wrong Thank You so much
Hollywood01 answered 12 years ago
So here we are again. I haven't fixed the slot #9 issue yet. Since my battery crapped out - the delay start has not changed. In fact - its getting worse. Not to mention - the gages are still on their own time & flash whenever and now a new problem... The headlights (while on) will cut themselves off. Holy damn Im so irritated! I will change slot #9 in hopes that it will completely change this car from a piece of raging s to a car I enjoy once again. Well..maybe not enjoy but tolerate. Thanks for all the insight.
Thanks to everyone who posted this you Dave me a tone of money! Going to get part now!
Saved****...Damn I can't spell this morning!!!.. lol
thank you so very much I just started having this problem right before Christmas. We had been guessing at problem to no avail, even my dealership mechanic said it would be best to take to dodge but I just don't want to spend the money right now but I do like to know what it could be since no one had an answer. now I have a direction to go in. thank you.
thank you very much i having the same problem in my 2007 charger, going to the store and get the part, i will keep everyone informed

I am having the same problem, but I have 2008 dodge magnum. It's at the dealership. they told me it was the wireless ignition nod. But now they can not get it to start at all. I had a key made by a lock smith and they said that is what messed up my car. But how would I be able to start the car with the wrong key. It doesnt make sense they are giving me the run around. my car has been in the shop since monday. Help!!!
I have a 2010 charger only 10,000 miles on it. last month we started having the same issue good thing it still under warranty took it to the dealership a couple of times they keep saying it was fine no issues found. just last week we went for a long trip we noticed when it gets hot and you want to restart it it won't start unless you move the gears to park then I will start, took it back to the dealership but this time I personally showed the manager and the technician the the issue it was having was having they had it for 7 days they could not figure out what was wrong with it till yesterday they call me that my car was ready, he said they change several parts until they figure out it was the brains of the car the computer I will post more details when I get my paperwork they're supposed to send it to me monday. I'm glad my car is fixed.
Hollywood01 answered 12 years ago
After all the issues I had with my charger - it finally crapped out on me last week. It wouldnt turn over. The battery is new so I had it towed to the dealership & the next mornin they called & said it was the ignition switch. I got it back the next day & have yet to have any of the same issues. About 2 days after gettin it back - the check engine light came on. Its been on ever since. What the heck!!?
thanks for all of your answers I have been having the same problem with a 2008 dodge charger finally they change the wynn module I bought a new key and it continued to have the same problem yesterday was the second time at the dealership so I read your blogs this morning and I called the dealership let them know what I found out. this afternoon I'm going to have a starter relay placed in my car and hopefully it will solve the problem. I will let you know. thank you. I think chrysler needs to be made aware of the problem I see is it is been going on back from 2006 up to 2008. I haven't seen any complaints on anything newer at this present time. I think we should get together and let them know
we should all reported to chrysler and the federal trade commission department.

I am a single parent with a child in college and I don't have money sitting around to waste .I have a 2008 Dodge Charger that was doing the same exact thing ...When I read the problems that were going on it was like I wrote them myself...This post saved me hundreds of dollars it was right on ...PERFECT...thank you so much ...The relay was so easy to find and replace myself ...you are the best !!!
Thank goodness for this thread. My wife complained about her ignition or some kind of delay on yesterday. Seem this issue had been going on about a week. I checked her 2008 Charger and there was a 3 second delay from turning the key to the engine starting. Car started every time but delayed every time. I Google'd the issue and discovered the problem wasn't unique. I found this thread in particular and learned about the Starter Relay. I went over to the dealership where I purchased the car. Mainly just to see what those weasels would say. You can bet $1000 to a doughnut that a crackhead will have a cigarette lighter...same thing apply to a dealership's service center having an lengthy ass solution to your problem that will be expensive. I left laughing and drove to O'Reilly's Auto Parts. The Starter Relay was $19.99. I replaced the damn thing in the parking lot. Again, thanks to everyone here....
I just bought my 2008 (Jun 27 2012) and on the first trip it started acting up after I stopped for gas. the Car would not start after a few tries. I turned the lights off and the car started. this was the first of many scenarios of trying many different "tricks" to start the car. I read your article and you were 100% correct. The Dealer parts Dept. had the wrong parts list. So I brought the #9 relay to them. After I got the right part, I plugged it in and the starter is working like it is supposed to. And after a couple of days, the car is still starting as soon as I turn the ignition. Thanks
Hi im happy to hear this, if any thing about car ask me And I will try hellp what I can. Saa_aa@yahoo.com Mr.sami Fl , orlando
hi if any one have a problem with car send for me direct messg send to my email. Thanks . Sammy
I had the same problem that everyone is having with a delayed start that got progressively worse! Today I bought a starter relegated and replaced the old one and now my 08 Dodge Charger starts perfectly.
I had the same problem with my 2008 Charger. About a week ago I started to experience a delayed start. Sometimes the delay was longer than others, however the vehicle always started. I went to the dealership, after reading this post, and they said I needed to pay $90 to diagnose it. I asked them to just replace the starter relay. They then told me they would have to take the dash out and installation was difficult. I told them I needed to replace box 9 under the hood. They replaced it (cost 16.00) and so far it is working just fine! Thanks so much for the post! Saved me a lot of $$$$
Its like the starter relay the problem in this car all the Time .
shannajones answered 12 years ago
Ok, I've read most of this n not sure if its the same problem... But my 2006 charger won't start when the car is hot, starts fine when its cold. Have had places look at it and tell me its nothing wrong but obviously there is! Is this the same problem??
Its like you have bad starter and You need new one . Saa_aa
Wow...these stories sound oh so familiar.....I have a 2007 charger and today I go out to start the car and nothing....the dashboard lights come on but when I turn the key nothing........so I'm guessing its the started relay as well...info was so helpful...gonna give it a try..Thnks Everyone...
i finally took my 2008 charger to the dealer and they had to replace my totally intergrated power module which is basically my fuse box under the hood. its about a 300 dollar fix
I also have a 2008 charger and was having the same problem. I replaced the starter relay which is under the hood in the fuse box in number 9 slot fixed the problem and only costs 4 dollars. My husband was very happy because I was going to trade it the next day.
I had the same problem as everyone else. Auto Zone didn't have the same part #. The guy said if I order it from Dodge it would probably cost $40. He said to take it out & he will try to match it up. Got a new switch for $14. It starts with no delay. Thank you so much for the information!
This might sound silly be have you tried cleaning the battery posts, THAT in-it-self would cause such problems, ie. not enough current to the (ECM) main computor as well as ALL sensors. Good Luck
missamazing answered 12 years ago
the same thing with my car they said the battery was bad and i replaced it, but im still having the same issues... i am on my way to buy a starter relay i will let you know if it works
Hi I believe. And I remember I say that about Your starter but I don't hear from you.
hello i have a 2007 charger that was working fine when i left work and tried to start my car it wouldnt i could here a clicking noise at first but now it still wont start i see my security lights or engine lights. the radio works and lights come on. please help
I replaced the #9 relay and the car starts fine now.
Question... I have this same exact problem. My car also shuts off while driving like it reads in other forums. I have 2007 dodge charger... would this also help that problem?
Hi Nick What siz your engine 2.7 And you have code p0... And what you mean your car Also shout off while drive. Pleas explain. Pleas explain for Me every thing and what your car Doing
I tell ya. My 2008 charger was doing the same thing not starting right up. First it started taking 2 to 3 seconds then longer to start. This morning, it would do nothin to start. I definitly appreciate "Supanovah" for sharing this info. I pulled out the Relay Switch from the #9 slot and placed it back just to see if this would help (wishful thinking) and it did. My car is now starting a little slow but least its starting until I can replace the Relay Switch with a new one. I Hope this is all I have to do but for now THANKS A LOT!! The local dealership in my area is ridiculous with their service charges.
Ok so my car was not starting like this as well. It was starting and shutting off before I could even put it in gear. I took it into Midas the guy reset my key. I guess there is an anti theft device in your key along with the unlock/lock/open trunk. This was not communicating correctly with my engine computer or w/e and they reset it and it started working. But it stopped again and I took it to the dealer and had to get a key replacement 170 + 60 programming fee... thanks dodge for making a waterproof key... dumb asses i'm never buying American again they didnt even honor my shift lock recall same year make and model and everything.
MsWilliams answered 12 years ago
I have a 2008 Dodge Charger that is doing the same exact thing. I took out the starter relay and replace it with an extra I have under my hood. However, nothing happen. Should I just go out and buy a new one. This is sooo... aggravating. figure replacing the it with one under there would do the job but of course it didn't.
Ya I was going to say you may want to check the starter relay and the crank sensor because my 1997 Dodge ram was having the same issue it just didn't want to start took it to autozone and all the same jazz and finally once I changed the relay it started acting normal again, but I went ahead and changed the sensor so you made out much better than I did.

I have a 2008 dodge magnum same exact problems from #1 on down , I will check this out and update after
Amazing article...I have a 2008 charger that has over 120,000 miles trouble free. My car started two delay starting and it got worse and worse. Especially when it was hot, replaced the starter relay # 9. Like magic starts with no problemos.
This works, wow! Thanks all. Best fix ever. Is Chrysler just crazy?!? I thought it was me!!! 3 sec start delay for 2 months, then no start at all. Just lights... I had battery and starter checked 3x at Sears, Firestone and AutoZone... uugh 2008 Charger 2.7 @ 112k mi 1. Disco Neg battery cable (in trunk) 2. Pull out #9 3. Insert new #9 4. Car starts like new and I save $90 Dodge diagnostic!!! $17 at advance auto "Relay BWD" part R4823 $17.89, AutoZone couldnt find a part number for it at all!
I have an 08 Dodge Charger and experienced this on vacation... We drove all the way but the day it was time to go home the car wouldn't wouldnt turn over. It was 4th of July weekend so we were stuck like 3 more days before we could have the dealership take a look at it... Long story short, the chip in my key went bad. I happen to be expereincing this a 2nd frikken time. My car is stuck across the water my friend's house. She had to drive me home... I'm grateful to know about the starter issue as well!
I have an 08 charger as well and have been experiencing the same problem. Hopefully this will resolve my problem. Thanks
So my 2006 has a problem starting usually in the morning. It's not a delay it actually try's to kick over but doesn't. I'll try 2 or 3 times then finally it starts, and runs fine. Some times it will kick over then just die. Then sometimes it will start perfect ......I'm so scared I'm gonna blow the engine holding the key over hoping it will kick over
Thank you to all the post in regards to the Starter Delay. I was almost bamboozled by the local Dodge dealership. The guy told me it was my battery, then he said he couldn't tell me what it was because the battery was dead and he couldn't do a diagnostic test on the car. I told him I was coming to get my 2008 Dodge Charger and not to do anything to it. When I got there he told me it was the timp module. I went on line and read all these beautiful posts having the same problem as me, you guys saved me $275 for a new battery and $495 for a new timp module. The dealership is a ripoff. They got me the first time, when they said it was the wynn module and I shelled out $380. Thank you so much for posting your Dodge problems. I changed out the #9, and I also had to change out the other fuse in the #22 slot. It had the same parts # as #9. The #22 slot kept getting real hot and once we changed it out, too the car started up like brand new. Again, I am grateful to all the posts. You guys are AWESOME!!!!

RayRay_Miami..........Supanovah , thank you, thank you, thank you, you Saved me a whole bunch of money.....I followed your instructions to the ' T' and the delay I was getting at start-up Stopped!!!...car started up like new....Thanks again....
Would it be the same problem if its not an actual delay? It tries to crank but don't....for 3 or more tries. Then starts???????
I would like to say this or ask you cant start the engien when the engien coold but after you try try to start the car and the engien come hot the car start ok and fine but after you stop the engine for more in 3 hour and you try start the engin you cant and tak time . Are what I say rit
Sometimes, especially when its cold, my car will crank but not start. By trying usually 3 times, it will finally start, and run fine. If I drive, and then allow it to sit for a few hrs, it will do it again. (Not always) its weird. Occasionally it will also do a 2 sec delay, then start as well.
2006 your engien siz 2.7 v6 are this correct . and I am here talking with m or f and your age . I need you how to change your spark a plug use reglar spark plug the cheep one and add oil stop smoke. And put full gas in your tank And add one dollar disal full in your Tank . do what I say and let me know

thank u so much dodge charger owners, DO NOT TAKE YOUR DODGE CHARGER TO THE DEALERSHIP! i read your post when my dodge charger wouldnt start and went to the dealership to by the relay switch, i called before i went to make sure they had the part in stock and when i got there they said they didnt have the part, this happened at to dealerships, to make a long story short O REILY'S had the part for 22$ and the dealership made 0 dollars instead of over 500$ once they gave u the run around remember #9 in the fuse box! its worth the 20$ to try it wrked for me.
To Mandalynn 3 days ago the dodge charger has a engine warmer u r suspose to by if u live in very could weather check your manuel

Thank you for the information on this! I have an 08 Charger with 3.5L V6 and just like everyone had the same problem. The car manual identifies the fuses but not the relays. How convenient for them! I tried switching places of all relays to see if this solved the problem…only fault with this is I did not recall how I switched all relays and no longer could tell you what relay was in the #9 position originally. I magnified the problem because the bad #9 relay was moved to a position that affected the alarm circuit and as we all know the alarm kills the ignition. I was pulling my hair out till I read this post was able to see that I was dealing with a small relay and knew there were only three options of which was the original relay. I figured out what relay was in the number 9 slot originally and replaced it with all back to normal. PHEW!!!!!
HEY SAA _AA.. I HAVE A 2009 CHARGER IT HAS 74K MILES AND I'VE NEVER I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW I'VE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS OUT OF IT UNTIL NOW. After I experienced this problem, I took my car in for a new issue.....the esp light now comes on, and will not let my car excel out of 2nd gear until it becomes warm then finally shifts normally. I just hate this car. I took it to the dealer and of course the light signal went off ( cause it was warm) and the mechanic reccommended changing the shifter unit. 275$ more. I dont understand why its such a shitty car. I love this style and wish it wouldnt be so difficult to enjoy ;( its almost like a limp mode??? Any ideas
ALL IT IS IS A GOOD LOOKING CAR... BUT IT'S NOT A GOOD CAR I'VE ONLY HAD MINE FOR 3 YEARS I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW IN 2009..I'M TRADING MINE FOR A MORE RELIABLE CAR... ONCE I FIND OUT WHAT THIS ISSUE IS WITH MINE I'LL POST WHAT IT WAS AND THE COST

migration_Bigmahh answered 11 years ago
I had basically the same problem with my 1999 Chrysler Concorde. It had the 2.7L six. At first, there would be a delayed start after cranking a few times when hot. It would start once it cooled off. Then it would stall when stopped at a red light, and I would crank and crank and crank then after the light turned red again, the car would start. I made it home, but I would have to put the car in neutral and goose the throttle when stopped. When I got home, I cut the car off, then futilely tried to restart the car. After sitting for about three hours the car started. I asked around about the problem, and I was told it was either the crankshaft position or camshaft position sensours. I replaced both, plus the engine coolant sensour, and the car never started again. I knew it wasn't the starter, because it took a hell of a lickin' and came back tickin'. I never even thought of the starter relay. I wish I could have found that out then, but I already sold that car and acquired a Ford F-250.
Im sorry I hear that . Its like you have bad fuel pump .
migration_Bigmahh answered 11 years ago
Someone I knew said the same thing, however that was my first guess. I was hoping it wasn't that, because I didn't have anywhere to raise the car high enough to drop the tank, so I sold the car to someone who had access to a lift. At least I made money with the F-250.
I am so upset!!! I was just told by the dealer that my "rear fuse box" from so sort of decay, has lost power inside causing my car to go into limp mode. Although, we know which one part is bad, the dealer is saying to replace the whole thing. What I need to know, is can u replace a part inside the fuse box??? They are selling one on ebay for 90$ with every wire going out....CUT!!! so it must be possible. The dealer wants to charge me 2400 just for the part. Wtf!!! Now why is that, when my car warms up it runs just fine??? But in the morning, when I first start it, the check engine comes on, the ESP BASS and goes into limp...Im so irritated right now!!! Plz help
Hi I would like to know what car we talk about and year and siz engine and what problem you have you mean when the car cold morning the engien run bad and after the engine worm run good you have hard time to start ur car morning and you have any cod and wher you from and how old you are and m or f .
U have helped me above. I have the 2006 charger. Car now starts fine, but now when it does, it starts in limp mode. Wont shift out of 2nd gear, until the temp gets to the middle reading then it shifts and runs fine. Took it to tbe dealer and the suggested changing the shifter module, did that and still limp mode. so he traced the prob to the rear fuse box that has a faulty circuit, and reccommended changing that now but it 2400$ I can buy that part on ebay for 90 $. I need to know if I can rewire that part. Look up rear fuse box and u will see that it holds thousands of wires and controls all power from and to almost everything in my car. Lights, radio, ect what do u think
Yet if I give my car 10 mins to warm up everytime I start it. Problem doesnt even exsist....so annoying
Your problem the gear wont shift when the engien cold this ur problem
First thing what I understand you have problem with ur trnsmission clutch or body valve . Are this problem come after you ching oil or spark plug
And what undrstand if you try drive the car morning you have hard shift its like the gear one or two stuk and some time you hear big sound come from your tranissimtion like humer ,bom, big nuck but if keep the engien run 15 ,mint worm up every thing will be fine the shift ok and no more slipe . but what I dont understand how could be the fues box the problem and what 2400 to fix this problem . What hot or cold engien do whith fues box .
I changed the shifter unit and the prob still exsist. the spark plugs are fine, I also just changed the rocker arms and pins on both sides. Its just so odd that my car goes into this mode when its first started, then it warms up and runs fine. my car detects a prob and sends itself into a limp mode. And the codes are associated with the pcm. So they took the rear fuse box apart, and found a part inside that was decayed and not getting good signal. So they told me to replace the whole thing and its 2400$ but I found the same part on ebay for 90$ so I would have to cut wires and fuse the together which seems scary since it controls EVERYTHING
I guess the rear box controls everything. It Has wires that run from the front of my car connecting to a fuse box to the back rear fuse box. When u open this box there are tons of wires. they control everything. The lights, radio, warning signals, esp, ect. So in this box is some decay from water Im assuming, which has lost full connection. But why wld it after warming up work???? If its not this what is causing my car to detect a prob, go into a limp mode, then work. Its a signal error but why after 15 mins it works is beyond me
You mean you cant have or read the code the machin say turn the switch on
What I understand go look for pcm like 100 dollar and ching ur pcm first try this first
My car when I shift from park to reverse kinda knocks into the gear, then from reverse to drive a littler harder. Wont go faster than 25mph and rpm is almost to 3 .....its stuck in a gear. Then after 15 mins it shifts. If I stop turn my car off, then immediatly back on the esp light is gone. And runs fine.
You have trans problem tak it to trans shop and let hime chick firs thing look and fix ur trans.
You have bad tran you need new one . Im sorry and good luck I hop im wrong about this .
I believe what I say from.what I understand from . you have bad trans this what you have to fix first . Good luck and I hop to hear from yo u soon .
I believe what I say from.what I understand from . you have bad trans this what you have to fix first . And bad pcm . Good luck and I hop to hear from yo u soon .
Ok dont wory about fuse box and 2400 and what ever he say . You need new transmission . And try new pcm . And dont forget to com back and let me know if im not wrong , . Thanks . Sammy.
So believe it or not, I open this reat fuse box that the dealer wanted to charge me 3000.00 to fix, and opened it to find, the relay discussed above was kn this bkx and I pulled it out and replaced and BAM!!!! My car runs like a champ. I fixed my car!! Thanku soooooooo much for tbe original post!! It cost me 20$
Hahah this very good im happy too , what I cant believe what the dealer tell you . Any way good . And you welcome .
Its funny cause the 1st time I took my car in (1month ago) was to get this part after reading this forum, and having similar issues. After the dealer assessed my car, they said the part number was not the right # for my starter relay, so they reprogramed anf switched fuses and sent me away. 6 days later thr esp light comes on and my car wont drive past 25 mi an hr but when drove for 10 min, wld wotk fine? So I took it bsck and reccommended I change out shifter mod cause in sll actuality it was in limp mode (ediots) we changed it and it did nothing 275$....so they checked everything causing the limp mode, esp light, power shortage and starter delay. They Found in the rear fuse box, 3 relays that looked decayed. So they told me the whole thing was damaged and wld cost 2400 just for the part. When I got it home I opened it up and found the same exact relay I originally wanted was the decayed part. I also got electric cleaner, they sell just for this putpose, changed it out. problem resolved
I just cant believe Dealers. Im so happy I found this original post!!! So relieved .....thanks for helping
Where can I find a starter relay for an 2008 dodge charger ?
I'm having the same issue of a delayed start in my 2007 charger se 3.5L. if it is too hot or too cold outside it takes a couple cranks to get it started. had firestone do checks multiple times and nothing shows for them and they "could not replicate the issue", was told to have the dealer look into it. problem stopped for a month or two, but the weather has also been between 40-80 degrees lately too. well, this morning when the temps dipped down to 25 last night my car will not start! the engine will actually turn on but does not stay cranked. I have looked at the fuse box and the car manual, but the numbers from above do not match for the starter relay to be in slot #9. please see the attached picture, the part number that is listed above(05269988aa or r4823 relay bwd) matches 7 different slots in the fuse box. the one in #9 is a 15 amp blue mini fuse and in the manual is shown to control the front control module, the manual indicates that the starter fuse is a 20 amp blue cartridge fuse and resides in slot 20. can you please assist as to exactly which fuse needs to be replaced in an attempt to fix this delayed start, now no-start problem? thanks!
uh, that is no help at all....
IM not sure about what you try to ask . You should chick all the fuse . And replace the bad one . And IM not sure you asking me about the relay or fuse . IM sort if you can try ask me again and clear how I can help you and what six your engine and I want you to know that Iam try help her for free . Try don't be mad . Thanks .
Ok what I under stand try do that I want you 2 Ching your spark plug and make sure the cup siz and have regular spark the cheep one and add stop smoke oil . And add water remove in gas tank and let me know . Try do this first .
which one is the #9 relay that is primarily spoken of in this forum? the one referred to in this forum(part 05269988aa or r4823 relay bwd) is located at slots 30 through 37. which one is the starter relay? and why does everyone else say it is #9 when #9 is a 15 amp blue mini fuse and in the manual is shown to control the front control module? how do I tell if they are bad?
I send for you some pic in your email You can tell if the fear bad how look like boring or have short or if you have testing light .
Thanks saa_aa I had took #9 out and replaced it with the ac fuse and my car cranked right up after two weeks .
I have 3 relays In the rear fuse box that have the same part # ending in AA. I cleaned two, and changed the one the dealer told me was bad by testing it. My car was trippen before I did this. And now runs great. I didnt get anywhere with the slit 9 thing either. They are the same part#. Cant u buy one and swap until u get a solid turn over. Make sure ur car if off each time. They cost 16$. I also got an elect cleaner fir our fuse box/car and leaned them. May just need that. But buy one. Sorry if this is conf. U can call me if u need help.
I'm fairly certain my fuse box is not the same as the 2008 model and the starter relay is actually slot 33. switched it out, still no luck, had towed to firestone, hopefully they can figure it out now -- since we've had it checked in the past for the starting delay and they "could not replicate the issue". here are some helpful pic i've found searching other forums:
What is the fuse for the windshield wipers for 2008 dodge charger ?
Hi i thing you have bad switch wipers and some time you have problem with the head light make sure the relay and moter ok . Good luck . Sammy
Hi i hope to hear from you . every thing ok . Have agood week end . Sammy

hello, i was having the same issue with my 2008 dodge charger. I assumed it was the battery but when I had my battery checked, everything was fine. I took advise off this site and bought a starter relay. The dealer of course gave me the wrong relay. The relay part # is 05269988AA. Cost me $22. It was a super easy fix. I open the fuse box located on the left front side under the hood. There is a map of the fuses and relays under the fuse cover. Look for #9 under the cover. Just pull on it and it pops off. After I replaced the relay. My car turned on with no problem. Thanks to this site and everyone's input my car is working fine now.

Thank you to everyone who wrote on this ...I have been trying to figure out why my car dodge charger 3.5L V6 would sometimes start and have a delay when it did decide to start, brand new starter, brand new battery and still the same thing. But would crank right out when I got a jump, so I would think if it isnt the battery why the heck does it crank right up when I am getting a jump. Reluctantly took it to Dodge, dude told me it would cost 768 dollars to fix...uhh so I decided to get on the internet to learn more about what the Dodge place told me, I know it didnt help that I'm a girl. Decided to try replacing the relay slot #9...I figured about 18 dollars is worth trying over 768. Now car starts fine, once again thank you to everyone for sharing this information.
thank u so much for this post! my 2008 charger is starting right up after switching the relay!!
I've had the same problem and after I had replaced the crank position sensor it still persisted and I thereafter replaced starter cut off relay and that still did nothing so I guess that I'd say replace the crank and cam postion sensors and the starter cutoff relay and see if that helps, but please let us know
Hey guys, I replaced the starter relay (slot #9 in the fuse box under the hood on the Right side) for a last time (the first time they used a used one) and had no other problems with it, however I did decide to get rid of the vehicle. A teenage girl is now driving the car and to my knowledge she has not had any further problems with this matter. I was not in to putting any big money into these problems especially if the smaller ones worked first.
I've been having the same problem as all mentioned above since 7-2012. Took to dealer on 3 different occasions and they had no idea what issue was, cause car started fine. Other times, it would take me from 2-30 mins to get started. Tomorrow is Saturday and I'll go buy the part and have someone put the part on. My question is...wouldn't this be eligible for a recall?
Yes this really should fix this problem . Let me know . Sami.
I belive you can do this . You need new relay . Its in fues box . Have agood day .
im having similar issues to some of you. but when i try to start the car im only hearing a clicking sound. all the lights, radio, wipers, etc is working so i know its not the battery. and my check engine light is blinking. oh and its a 2006 dodge charger
Well I bought the part yesterday. For 17 dollars. And put the part on myself. And it started right up. Praying that is the end too this nightmare. Thanks for your post.
Hi every one my email is saa_aa@yahoo.com I can help you any thing about car . You should be over 18 @ and you know and you can work in car . Thanks
I would like to get a Charger, but it seems to me They are a P.O.S. from what I have been reading here. Do the Challenger's have this Prob? Also it seems that all these cars in here are V6's not the Hemi, or SRT, am I wrong here? Do they all have the same issue? Have they seemed to get a hold of the prob on the 12s, and 13 models? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. I am also looking for any kind of GLH, or GLHS. Anyone know of any? I am in Colo, don't really want to ge very far, unless I have to, to find what I want?

Same problem, put key in and turn, hesitate around 3 seconds then start. Replaced starer relay, works like new!!!!! What did we do before the internet??? Thanks to all who helped.
From the top of the answers - The problem was the Starter Relay The Starter Relay is located in the fuse box under the hood, in slot #9. If you try to buy it from a parts store they will have to order it, so go buy it from your local Dodge Dealership's Parts Center. The part# is 05269988AA The cost was $15.75 plus tax it was $16.86.

After reading many of your issues and answers, I ordered a Camshaft Position Sensor, after my 2008 3.5 H.O., Dodge Charger began to delay on starting. For about a week the delay seem to get a little longer. One time after putting the FOB in and turning it to the right and releasing it, after a count of one thousand one, the car sputtered, cut out and then after about 2 seconds, without me doing anything, started up. Within about a week of this, the car finally quick cranking. As a lot of you stated you had done; I went to the local auto shop and had the battery test (in the trunk....really?). The test came back, "Battery Good." No other problems showed on their analyzer, so I ordered the camshaft sensor and installed it today. After about 4 attempts the car finally started. I ran it back to work, let it sit for a few hours, and started it again, But----it only starts after I put the FOB in, turned it right and then released back to center, it started after a one thousand one count.............I think, since I'm going on a long trip soon, I may replace the #9 Fuse as suggested by, "Supanova." Thanks and good luck!
Hi I'm not sur what you try to say or if I can help you . But I don't say fuse its a relay starter I hop for you the good luck . And for your supanova .

A BIG THANKS FOR THE INITIALS POST BECAUSE WE WERE GOING THRU SIMILAR SITUATION. Today I decided to Google why 2008 charger won't start and found my answer. Thanks for saving me money
Just a, "Heads-UP." I reported approx. 4 weeks ago of a problem I was having starting my 2008 Dodge Charger V6. Thanks for the reply wolfpride83, hope my suggestion helped........However, ultimately, I had to take my car to the local Dodge Dealer. They have had my vehicle since June 4th and the problem is still isn't fixed. A Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) was ordered, but none in stock across the country (any other dealer that may have had one would not release it). According to the Dodge Service Supervisor, they are actually having to build approximately 2,000 of these WIN's for Dodge Chargers (I'm guessing 2006-2008 models) all over the U.S. Anyway, the due date for this part making it to my neck of the woods is July 11th. Ye-Hah!!

Hi elmixicano 101 What Sam problem you have what you talking about i would like if some one can exaplin pleas . Thanks
Oh boy! I should have looked this up before having my 2008 5.7L Hemi towed to the mechanic. I just called them and asked about the Starter Relay. They told me it was fine and that my problem is a dead battery. So, I said, "Ok thank you. I will pick up my car this afternoon". Then I'll drive to the Dodge Service Center and buy a Starter Relay. THANK YOU!!!
PLEASE HELP!! I have a 2006 charger that's been sitting in my backyard for over 2 weeks now. It won't start at all.. It won't even attempt to turnover. In the past it would start for about 3 sec then die out. The VTA (Vehicle Theft Alarm) is on. I'm trying to find a way to off it. Or find any solution to fix this problem and get back on the road! Please Help! God bless
So I have a 2007 dodge magnum with the same delay issue for the past month. My husband drive it to work and it would not turn all the way off now after he had a hard time starting it. Is this still the starter relay issue?
My best guess would be either your starter relay or your W.I.N. (Wireless Ignition Node). According to the local Dodge Service Supervisor, within the last two months, there have been over 2,000 W.I.N.'s that have gone out in either Dodge Chargers or Magnums with year models around yours and mine............Mine has been on back order since the beginning of June. Good Luck!
If any one like to ask me . Pleas send email to saa_as@yahoo.com Mr. Sami
This for seff First make sure ues the rait. Key with sheep . And you need program the car Or you need new model contrl

so thankful for this thread. 2008 Dodge Charger 3.5 V6. I started experiencing the delayed ignition about 8 to 12 months ago. At first it was only a second or two... then three to five. I told the dealership about it during routine maintenance visits and they told me it was normal and it would go away. Well it did for about a month and then it came back worse. Sometimes up to 8 seconds. Well the car always started so I figured whatever but still I thought some day I would end up stranded somewhere. Well that day came. After calming my temper I found this thread and read just about everything in it. I borrowed my girls car, drove to O'Reilly Autoparts and found the correct fuse. Came home, inserted it into the #9 slot and now my Charger fires up just like it used to. Just goes to show sometimes the douchebags at the dealership just dont give a crap or dont even know about it. I guess if you want something fixed you might as well do it your damn self. I will say thought that yes it's the #9 slot part no.05269988AA that goes under the hood not in the back trunk. But when I gave the guy at the store the part number nothing came up. Turns out they had it listed in their inventory under the number above the part number which is 21911C. So try both numbers when you go to the store to get it. It cost me $22.00. Major stress relieved. Now time to crack open a beer.

i have had the same problems with my 2008 dodge charger. It was working fine and when i came back to my to leave it would not start. I thought the battery was dead i tried to jump it off and that did nothing. we changed the starter and that helped for about a month and now it did the same thing again. someone told it was my flexplate but i don't think its that because there is no loud grinding noise just a small click when i try to start it. we got it to start by moving this part that is connected to the belt that was supposed to be for the flex plate and it is running for now. so i will try to change a starter relay and see if that will help. has any one else been told it could be your flex plate?
Thank god for this post saved me a whole bunch of money.. I have dodge charger 08 and it would take me 10-20 minutes to get it started I ran the tests for the codes and nothing came up. Checked the battery and that was fine. Mechanics couldn't figure it out so I took it to the dealership and they wanted to charge me 120$ just to check it out so I just tried the started relay fuze and its starting perfect now.. Only 20 bucks
I have a 2009 chrysler 300 same issue with mine. First it had a delay then didnt want to turn on. I read the post and replaced the starter relay. It worked! However it stopped and once again will not turn on. Do i have to replace the starter relay again? Because i only had it for two days and it went out. Is it a more serious problem? Please help!
I had the same problem with my 2008 Charger. I've replaced the Camshaft Position Sensor, which seem to solve the problem, but after a week, I started having the same problem. Ultimately I had to take the car to the local Dodge Dealer. According to the Dodge Service Supervisor, my Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) was bad and needed to be replaced. However due to a country-wide shortage with this part, I had to wait for a month and a half to get the part in. I now have my car running again, but the last month and a half was a pain!! Good Luck!

I have the same problem with my 2007 charger the lights and radio work but wont start! How do you know it's the starter relay? I checked it and it looks fine is it suppose to look burned or something?
I had the same problem. I have a 08 charger 3.5 . One morning I tried to turn the car on but nothing. I charged the battery and luckily it started. Took my car to the dealer and it was diagnosed with wireless control module failure. Got it fix and now works fine. It is a common problem and is due to a malfunction part. If anyone wants to know more go here http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ owners/SearchResults.action people can also submit a complaint if desired.
Sorry this website is easier. http:// www.safercar.gov/ just enter year, make, and model and people can find recalls, complaints, and investigations. Hope this help!
Can someone help. I have 08 charger 2.7 v6. I was having problems as well with car starting. Two days ago it didn't start. I changed #9 relay and still it didn't turn on. When I place the key you only here the ding noice, radio doesn't turn on or any of the lights on dash. Removed ignition switch and disconnected battery for 20 minutes and had to turn key several times and it worked but it only worked 3 times and now it doesn't work. The family mechanic says its the ignition switch which is a box but called dodge dealer ship and they say they don't sell it and I need to take car in. Please help
I was experiencing the same issue with the delayed start on my 2009 Charger I asked my bf to get it checked out. He went to Autozone and was automatically told the chip in the key was the issue (I don't have $250 to get new key) I found my extra and tried cranking it up and I was still having the same probem after reading this forum I went straight to the dealership purchased the starter relay $23plus tax changed it immediately and my car started up just fine thank you all so much saved me a lot of money I ALMOST took it to the dealership to get checked out :)

Woo hoo thnak you soo much for this article. I went to a mechanic with the same exact issue, he told me to go to the dealership because he couldn't figure it out. Went to the dealership and he said it was the ignition switch which is on backorder for 2 weeks. While I am waiting I was telling a coworker about my issue and he came across this article and I went and got the relay and it was not slot 9 for my issue it was one of the other slots (I cant remeber which one) and now it cranks up eveythime right away. This just saved me $300

I have had the same issue for almost two years now on my 2008 Charger SXT. Have gone round and round with them telling me nothing was wrong, something is wrong. Dodge Dealer first replaced what they were calling the brain receipt says Wireless Ignition Node in Oct 2011 error codes were B2102 and B1A35, that made the car think I was stealing it and more repairs were needed to make it understand the new brain. Problem returned in March of 2013 they again replaced the Wireless Ignition Node this time only showing error B1A35 saying the first part must have been bad. Here it is 8 months later October 2013 and the problem has again returned. This time they tried to tell me that they found no error codes thus nothing is wrong, took the guy out and showed him that I have to hold the key for a very long time to get it to start 15 to 20 seconds and sometime it doesn't start at all and from experience I know it will only get worse. I have tried throughout this whole nightmare to ask them about the #9 starter relay and they have up until today blown me off. After I had a hissy they said they would put a new one in. Well it started right up. They then had the b _ _ _ s to ask me to keep them posted if it keeps working it may help other customers. Just wanted to say thanks to all the real car guys out there who posted that and helped this girl who doesn't know what she's talking about :0)

I just want to say thank you so much for posting a solution! I had thought it was the battery going dead in the key fob, or the starter going bad. Rather than take it to a mechanic (when I can barely afford routine maintenance anyway), I thought I'd try your solution! I paid about $20 for the part at my dealer. Not only was the part number correct, but where the relay went was right on too! My car starts right up now!!! THANK YOU!!! :)
So I have a 2009 dodge charger sxt was having issues cranking took 3- 4 times. ... Then one day had to get it jumped. .took it to advance said battery bad paid $166 for a new one good for two weeks then problem came back read this post replace starter relay good for 4 was now the problem is back help please
Dodge Charger Wont Start. I had the same problem with my 2006 dodge charger R/T but mine has the kill switch added and has a different fuse for the "starter". Car would not start and clicking noise (small wiggle) may have been coming from the broken fuse under the hood but I was was alone and couldn't check. Light, Radio, etc worked fine and jump starts worked if cable and donor battery could handle it. I checked some other fuses that above people have commented on by switching them with the same amp fuses from other LOW PRIORITY components (of the same amp amount don't forget) This saves some money and time by checking fuses yourself. ⎈FIX!!!- I replaced slot #33 (says "starter" in picture) with part 05269988AA which cost $19 at a dodge or chrysler dealership. I can't use my kill switch at the moment but at least my car starts.
I have a 09 dodge charger SE 2.7L and this morning the car wouldn't start, but all the lights and the radio turn on just fine just the car wouldn't crank to start. I checked several website and every one was saying is the starter relay, so I took a spare from the other fuses and swap them. Still wouldn't start, but every else work even the headlights turn on, radio, windows row down and up,but won't crank on the car, so I said let me give it a shot and instead of buying a start relay fuse I took out the battery and took it to advance auto parts to get it checked out and BAM! They said battery has only 5% juice left, so I bought a $200 battery that has more crank to it and put it back in the car and WALLAH! The car turn on like if I just bought a brand new car. I can now feel the difference of the car. It feels like it has more power. Always check the small things before u take it to the dealership. Everybody saying it's the start relay and I was having the exact same problem has everyone was describing and it came out to be the battery.
Well I got 2008 have not had that problem, but I would think any good mechanic like at firestone or Goodyear . Should diagnose The problem. If not starting could be The battery, or fuel pump . Check the wires that connect to the battery make sure they cleaned could have interment problems . But if was the fuel pump I don't think it would restart . Unless has somthing to do with the microprocessor where the gas isn't getting to the engine when starting and a delay in getting to spark the starter which I think the battery . So u need fuel, eletric ,a spark, which comes from the belt or could be a interment starter like u say wont start after bieng lije overnight a cold start . See if it's the starter , battery most in all my cases was the battery one time the fuel pump ,
Thanks to everybody your help and responses here. I did try replacing the Starter Relay, and even though it didn't work, I feel much better knowing that it's not just my car.
Hello. I have a 2008 dodge charger r/t (hemi). Tried starting it one morning and it wouldn't crank. I got a boost off and drove to Auto Zone to get my battery checked. My battery was no good so I replaced it. Every since I got the new battery my car has gotten worst. First the engine light came on and now it seems as if it doesn't want to take off when I put it in drive. There are times when it completely shuts off when I'm at a stop light or sign. I've tried putting it on the machine put it seems as if the mechanic can't put the code in. I don't know what to do or what's wrong and I don't have the funds to go to the dealership. PLEASE HELP

We just recently had similar issues with our 2008 Charger. We had to change the cam shaft and the crank shaft sensor and also gave it a tune up. You can change the sensors yourself especially the cam shaft as it is on the fornt of the engine and all you have to do is unplug it, take a bolt out , pull it out, and replace. We also cleaned the throttle body. However the spark plugs are deep in the engine and you may want to take it to a mechanic to do the tune up. We did and she runs brand new now. The starting issue may be the same issue we have been discussing in this thread as far as the relays in the black box under the hood. Hope this helps.
I need help plz... I have a 2006 dodge charger 3.5.. Same issues as everyone else except my car cranks but don't start... All lights & radio works. Except dash lights. I went to autozone to change my fuse in the trunk while key was in aux (semi-on) after taking out the 5amp my car turned out.. Put it back in everything normal except car cranks but don't start... Can this also be the starter relay? I NEED HELP PLZ before I take it to the dealer

Hello, everyone! Thanks for all of the comments. I have a 2008 Dodge Charger and it seems to have started to work perfectly fine and now my car seems to not start up after running for a while. Here is the thing: It seems like it has to cool off before starting up again. All of my lights come on, radio, and even my air conditioning. Also, like you stated ttadams40, I cut my air on and heat blows out first. Can someone please assist me with this immediately. Will I still have to get a starter relay>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I have a 2008 charger. Same problem that the car won't Start. I check #9 relay and was getting hot so I swap it with wiper relay just to get it started and running to the dealer to get a new relay. Few months later it started with the same problem. Turning the key several times for 15 minutes. Sometimes the module read the key and sometimes not. Took the car to the dealer. They said they swap a use module and the car started right away. Then they put the old one back and nothing. Dealer charging $900 plus tax for 2 new keys and a module that's a big box behind the dash board. I was planing to get a viper start up alarm system. :'( Why 2 new keys is because dealer service said the frequency was getting low and the module needs to be replace.

hey everyone. I have a 2007 dodge magnum and im having this issue. currently stranded at work. I tried replacing the fuze in slot 9, but nothing changed. Ive also tried using the spare key that I typically don't use. This also didn't help. Can anyone tell me what to do next? PLEASE . "Changing the starter relay", is that what I did essentially by trying to replace the fuse? or, is that stating there is an actual PART that I need to replace. Im not very car savy. Please help.

im happy to at least attempt to follow up with you, even though nobody had the decency to try and help me ( smh) lol. in my experience, after all the ripping and running I did, all the things I tried, it the end, the issue was the starter. This was after I had replaced the replay switch etc. my suggestion at this point in the game for you, is the starter.

you're very welcome @BaberA. I hope that everything gets resolved for you, good luck!
2008 Dodge Charger 3.5L V6 - Would start and other times would not. Replaced the battery (around $150), which needed to be done anyway, but still had the issue. Replaced the starter relay in the trunk (around $20) but it still would not start. I did try jump starting it from anther running vehicle and it started. I replaced the crankshaft sensor (around $10) but it still would not start. Replaced the relay (same as the one in the trunk) in the #9 slot under the hood, and it started immediately.

Hello thereto all owners having problems with a no crank issue when trying to start your car. i would get all my dash lights on, all accesories would power up, but turn the key and nothing! It would sometimes start right away and other times, i'd turn my key for twenty minutes until it would start! Very frustrating!! I read a lot of posts, a lot of starter relays, new or reprogrammed keys, PCM's wireless reciever nodes... Me being a diesel mechanic and not rich by any means, I couldn't afford to take it to a Dodge Stealership for repairs! Long story short, i ended up removing my ignition switch assembly and took off the switch to test it. And some little pieces of aluminum fell out! Not good, but i knew i just found my problem! It's called the IGNITION SWITCH ACTUATOR' check it out! It's not hard to do and can be done in a few hours, if you haven't done one before!! Good luck!!
I just bought a 08 Dodge Charger over the weekend and I noticed twice since I bought it that I had the same problem. I have forwarded this to my husband so we can get the #9 fuse. Thanks for posting this! I hope nothing else but this is wrong with it. I love my car just this one little hicup.

I have had my 2008 dodge charger since may 2014 and I have been having problems here and there with my car starting and lately it was delaying starting or not starting at all without a jump. I was scared it was going to be expensive to fix but after some research the #9 fuse did the trick I was SO GRATEFUL and had to share.

has anyone notice thire headlights are dim and go in and out or even thire engin seems to sound a little loud or a wierd smell?????
Thank You Supanovah and Ladyskd123. I'm having this same problem and it wouldn't start at all today, nothing. I'm going to the dealership in the morning.
My g/f has a 2008 charger that will not start, dealer told her that it was the ignition switch control module, apparently this is a common issue with the 2008 chargers, it comes from wear and tear, usually on vehicle that have over 100000 miles, the part is not available anywhere, so if you take your car to the dealer, you will be without your car for a while, she has been waiting going on 3 weeks, no car, no part. there is also a recall on the ignition switch , its recall # p57. if you go to safecar.gov, you can put in your vin # and see if your car falls under this recall, this is for the switch, if its the module, that something totally different, and it will cost you over 1000 to repair, so leave it to our great American auto makes to still find a way to screw you.
Here's a pic! Fuse box!
I have an 07 Dodge charger the problem was a Little different it would start but then it would shut off so I hit the gas pedal and blew the fuse in the trunk then it wouldn't start at all so I changed out the keys to the correct dealership key and now it starts. Thank you for all the tips and help

I have a 2006 dodge charger, and I was having very similar symptoms to the ones that were talked about earlier! I would go to start it and either there would be a 3-4 second delay of it starting, or it wouldn't start and just click. After a couple tries of turning the key it would finally start, never failed which was nice. I wanted to figure out what the problem was and read this forum and got the idea of changing the starter relay. I went to auto zone and told them about what was going on and they wanted to check my battery. Not sure if checking the battery is something people do by default with issues like this, but that was definitely my issue. 10V instead of 12V, and once he changed it out it started right up with no delay. Such a relief, and figured this might help someone who may not think to check the battery.

DodgeLover4Life answered 9 years ago
Fortunately my problem was solved with a second try. I initially called a tow company and the driver said its probably the battery because the car would turn on the lights and power but not the engine and said this is common when batteries start to go bad. I questioned it as I normally do by researching online and stumbled apon this blog. I took my battery and the starter relay to a local auto parts store. They tested the battery and it was fine. Then they searched for the part to fit my car (2008 Charger) but couldn't find the right size so I went to the dealership. Once I installed the part the car started up perfectly.
I have also experienced this problem. Delays in starting occasional No Start. The car wouldn't even try to turn over - It would just 'sit' while I held the key in the start position. I could hear the fuel pump rev up to prime the system, so I know fuel isn't the issue, and neither is the battery. The startup sequence is computer controlled, and the computer looks for various inputs from sensors before engaging the starter. It will look for feedback from the camshaft and crankshaft sensors, so there is potential for problems there as well. Both sensors are available for about $11 bucks each online. While you're under the hood, you might as well replace the starter relay and the autoshutdown (ASD) relay as others have suggested - their positions and relay number will vary from model year to model year. You can get the OEM relays for $15, or you can get an aftermarket one for literally $2 on Amazon.com. At any rate, I replaced both sensors, the ASD relay and the Starter Relay. I have no idea which of these solved the problem, but the whole thing cost $25 bucks and took 45 minutes. No problems for a few days, I'll post again to say whether this is or is not a long term fix for me.
Thanks everyone for the advice because I have the same start up issue..so i'm try switch #33 for 2006 dodge charger first but my question is???did you also change the key because I have my original key from dealer and never had replace?
I did not change my keys. 3 days since I changed the cam/crankshaft sensors and fuel pump/add relays. Fires up immedialtely.

Ok I figured out the problem, If you have changed the the starter relay and checked the battery and still no luck. Good News, its the Starter Switch Actuator Pin. and it cost about $45 I was able to pick it up an auto part store that same day. it took me about an hour to place it and finally it work. Trust me I read this tread and try everything with no luck. I kept researcing and found a video on youtube of guy replacing it. Thanks to everyone for keeping up with this. My Charger has been having a delay when I start it (been doing it for about 6+ months) Last night leaving work, it didn't start on 2 consecutive tries. Radio came on, all lights on dash came on and went off, lights came on, etc.. (batter is 1 year old and was checked 2 months ago because I was concerned about the delayed start so I know that wasn't the problem) Started on the 3rd try and drove home no problem I did research and found a very helpful youtube video of a guy with the same issue I did. I then found this page and read some of the responses. Car started this morning but I did not take any chances. I went to the dealer and bought a starter relay ($25)... switched them out and it is starting with no delay. I sure hope the problem is fixed.. Thanks to everyone for your input :)
Thank you Supanovah! This happened to my 2008 Charger yesterday and suggested it to the shop! It worked! Just a fuse!

The car drives fine when you 1st start it and drive it for maybe about 15-20 miles or at least until the hot cold temp control arm is straight up in the middle on the dash...then the car starts to vibrate , the check engine light starts to beep and blink,...the car starts shaking and running rough...I changed the plugs and coils ...I took it to the dealership for the recall ...the check engine light when off but not its back and doing everything all over again ....
I have a 2009 Charger and the car would not start at all. it will crank but it won't start and all the lights are showing on the dash but I have the lightningbolt symbol and I don't know what that means so I don't know whether changing the number 9 will fix the problem. but thanks for the information because I'm going to try it anyways because it's not that expensive.nor would it hurt. If anyone can help me with this. I also feels that my key is playing a part also.

I had the same problem and I tried the starter relay fuse. It appeared to do the trick but later that day he died again. So I went back to square one and traced the problem back to the battery. Those cars have 2 12v charger ports to charge cell phones and things of that nature inside of the car. The 1 on the dashboard is wired straight from the alternator and has nothing to do with the battery because that 1 cuts off when you shut off the car. The 1 that is located in the armrest runs continuously off the battery. If you leave anything plugged to this port it may drain your battery over time. I unplugged my car charger and plugged it back in to the dashboard port and noticed my car started to crank like new without hesitation.
Charger_project08 answered 8 years ago
Wanted to do a follow up to my answer from a few days ago. Since I removed my cell phone charger from inside of the armrest my car has been running like new. My neighbor has a 2013 dodge dart and he is now having the same issue. His car went dead also. I told him what I found out. I love my Dodge but the armrest charging port is a terrible design flaw. Before you by any fuses, new batteries, or starters try the armrest charging port. Will save you a lot of money. Take your battery out and over to advance auto parts, AutoZone or whatever is for you and leave it overnight for a 24 hour charge. That should fix your problem. Write me here to let me know how it turns out.
Just today received a recall notice for the key fob/ and or ignition. Paid $360 for two new fobs and reprogramming. Now I fully expect they will reimburse me for the service. Just wanted to pass this info along.
Thank you STLTONY. Does it say whether you'll get two key fobs? I've been having trouble with my key fob. It's starts the car it just stopped locking the door. I even bought some aftermarket fobs, programmed them, and had the same problem. They stop locking after about a year.
Unfortunately, my model was recalled for the fob. But it was very helpful to ask. Thank you STLTONY
JUST WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH. We had no idea what was wrong with our charger. I was getting ready to bring it to the dealership when I saw your post. We went to autozone and thank GOD they had the starter relay in stock!! My car is back on the road!!! Thanks again!!!
I've had the same issues with starting. Changed the starter relay 2x. still did not work. Maybe it was an after market part. Did the ignition recall thinking that would fix the issue, received 2 new fobs. Still did not work. Had the dealer checked it out their diagnose was internal failure of STARTER RELAY CIRCUIT and recommend replacing the TIPM for $1790.00. I declined. Told them to put it back together and picked up my car, haven't had a problem with starting it since. Go figure ?????????Oh except after picking up car from dealer the wipers no longer work. Oh boy! Frustrating.

Its disgusting to me that so many mechanics shops are not able to complete these simple repairs in a timely manner. 1, if no start then turn on headlights or heater blower fully. 2, lights actually on or blower running ok??3, leave lights or blower on and try to start. 4, no start...did blower stop or lights go dim??? if stopped or lights go dim....LOW BATTERY. If nothing went dim or low.....START CIRCUIT FAULT. Its that simple really...... Delayed starting can be a bit more troublesome as many more factors come into play like temperature, uhhh....empty fuel tank(dont laugh it happens), old fuel filters, etc....

By the way....NEVER RELY ON PARTS STORES TEST EQUIPMENT. Autozone often hires people who just came from a supermarket or clothing store and really have no idea what taxes are let alone how to use test equipment. I have observed trained parts store employees use a load tester on my batteries and misdiagnose them as being good.
We have a 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8 6.1 we have replaced the alternator, starter, and battery. We came across this post and went and picked up the part (starter relay). Did not fix the problem. Noticed that we have a ground wire on the back left hand side burning but I have no Idead what wire it's from?? Could anyone help with this?
For those that have this issue of the key not working at all. (Not just a delay). I had the same issue and had to take mine to the dealership. Turned out to be a bad Win Module, which is the device you insert your key into. I was raped for the tune of $981.00. :(
Also, I was told that this is a big issue with the 2008 Chargers and if enough people complain to Headquarters it can be a recall. So I am filing my complaint and suggest everyone else does as well.
So update on my issue. We had a ground wiring harness that was bad. Cost $170.00 at a side shop as dodge recommended us to take it to a shop that Specializes in wiring diagnostic. They couldn't guarantee they could run the issue down at the dealership?!?!
Mark, You are awesome and I the problem that you figured out was the issue. You need to work for DODGE!!!
If I broke my car key on my dodge charger 2008 will my car cut on
I have 2008 Dodge charger 3.5l it would only start after setting an hour or longer. I found out after taking the car to the dealership that the ABS module was bad. They replaced the module and it's starting just fine now. The ABS module a little over $400.00..
This kind of dont have anything to do with this but its a similar problem i had, if you do an engine swap and have issues with it trying to start hot such as it just clicking as if the battery was dead check all ground cables i missed one because it got shoved in the back and gets hidden when you put the engine back in
i have a 2007 dodge charger. was running great... night before last went to start it, turned key nothing....tried it several more times it started... the next day it started all day...went back out that night, again nothing....changed fuses....still nothing...please help
also had battery, starter and alternator checked all fine
replace the starter relay and the ASU relay under the hood. This seems to be the cause of 90percent of issues where the car won't even turn over despite a good battery etc. 2 minute fix that will cost you less than 20 bucks at any auto parts store. I go though this every 4 or 5 years on my 2009. Also, if your mechanic can't find this problem, demand your money back and find a new problem.

Had a similar issue; ended up being a part that is between the ignition switch and the tumbler/ignition key hole. It’s a cheap little piece of aluminum that broke and every once in awhile would catch, giving me an intermittent no start issue. Cost me about $20 and about a half hour of time. Just a thought as long as everything else checks out as good. Trust me i was ready to run my car off a cliff, me not in it of course! Good luck!
Please help me fix my dogde chagers 08 v6 won't crackor start
What should I do about my 2008 dogde chagers won't crack or start need help asap
I tried the starter relay it still won't crack or start
This sounds like what I encountered before. I found out that there was a recall on the ignition. I would take call the NTSB to see if your Dodge is part of that ignition recall. We did and found out that ours was. Since then, the only problem we have is now: The car cut out on our poor autistic daughter at a major intersection on her way to school. She was quite hysterical. 1. It was acting like it was low on power. 2. Our insurance company had it towed home. 3. We had our battery checked out at AutoZone and they charged it free for an hour and it checked out fine. 4. We put it back in the 2008 Dodge Charger 3.5L High Output and it was able to get to the AutoZone (1 mile away) to have alternator checked ..... the idiot didn't know their ass from a hole in the ground .... and back home with power to spare 5. 4 hours later after sitting in driveway with 30 degree temperatures she is still cranking over like a champion BUT she has a high pitched whine like their is an issue with a belt or something. I don't want my daughter to drive this until we get this taken care of properly. It currently has 107K miles on it (original) yes it's lower mileage because I got sick and had a few strokes and don't drive much. She graciously ... and with a HUGE GRIN (what teen wouldn't) .... took over on that American Muscle ...... I don't want the alternator or water pump to go on her so I would like some confirmation if someone or a few people had same issue and think this could be a belt and how big of a problem this fix is. I am sure a visit to YouTube will be warranted here!
Supanova.....you are indeed a lifesaver!!! You don't even wanna know how much money I've wasted on parts, labor and towing over the past 2 weeks!! WOW!!! I'm so pissed right now but happy that I decided to Google it and Bam! I owe you big time. Ok long story short....I replaced my starter, key fob, key ignition and I got it towed twice because it went from hesitating to not starting at all. After doing all that I googled it and went to the parts store to get a starter relay ($16.43). A simple damn fuse that took me 2 seconds to install and my car instantly started!!!!! Thanks man.....you are indeed a LIFESAVER!!!!!
FYI - Emergency quick fix if the Dodge has been hesitating when starting and getting worse or now won't start at all...I have an 09 Dodge Charger that has been doing this to the point where I was afraid that one day soon it just wouldn't start at all as the delay was getting so long. Under the hood on the front left is a fuse box, open the lid and the starter relay is in the center at the back of the box. It is spot# 9. If you are not sure which one, look under the lid of the fuse box for the list and reference locations. Once you know what that relay looks like, you will see that there are 4 relays in that fuse box that are the same. To fix the starting issue, just switch one of the 2 on the right side of the box (location # 16 or 17) with the starter relay in location# 9. Best to use the one closest to you on the right (#17) because if you use the back on on the right side of the box (#16) your wipers won't work but the #17 spot just controls the wiper speed. The car will then fire right up with no hesitation. IMPORTANT: Don't forget...you will still need to replace the defective relay but this will get the car running again.
Thank you for this post. My 2008 300 was taking longer and longer for the starter to run. It was sitting in my driveway and it would not turn over AT ALL. I swapped 2 identical relays ( #9 and another) and the car started. swapped them back and it would not. swapped again and it started back and it would not.......... gotta get me a relay
We just had it plugged in by a helpful autozone worker who sauce at the gas station and it was Au sensor above the gas tank that has a celluloid that's not working. So it is causing a vapor lock area

Hello Everyone! I recently purchased a 2008 Dodge Charger. The engine had been upgraded to a 3.5 from a 2.7 when I purchased it. The car ran good for the first two weeks, then my key fob would no longer lock my doors. I took the car to a local Dodge Dealership to see if the fob may of need reprogrammed. When the technician placed the scanner under the dash to read the trouble codes, I was informed that there was a recall on my Ignition Control Module (ICM). The good news was it came with two new key fobs! I didn't have any problems with my car until two days later. That's when the cranking issues began. Sometimes it would take 3-10 times and would start-up. But, as many of you had experienced, I didn't want to be stranded somewhere, so I didn't drive the vehicle. I took the car to Autozone and had the battery and alternated tested, they both were good. I decided to have my mechanic put a starter on. Still the same issue. I went and purchased a new starter relay fuse from O'Reiley's Auto Parts ($16.00), still wasn't cranking. Now, I'm getting frustrated. I took the car back to the person I purchased it from and they ran the scanner and the following codes displayed, (U0168- Lost Communication with Vehicle Security Control) (B2104-Ignition Run Start 1 Circuit Low) and (B1A2B- Engine Control Module (ECM) Mismatch with Sentry Key Imobilizer (SKIM). The dealer recommended that I take the car back to Dodge, because they hadn't programmed my key fobs correctly and this was the cause of my cranking issues. He also told me how to start the car through the starter relay fuse, so I wouldn't be stranded if I wanted to drive the car. I removed the plastic cover from fuse #9 under the hood. On the right hand side of the fuse facing the car, if you take your finger and push the side of the fuse upwards, the car will start! You must have the key turned to the on position for it to work. I took the car back to Dodge and of courts, they stated that they would take a look to ensure the keys were programmed, but they also told me that if that wasn't the issue, there would be a $155.00 diagnostic fee. I received a call the next day stating that the wire that connects to my starter (selenoid connector) was bad and this was the cause of my problem. The grand total was $498.00! Dodge charged me $155.00 for the diagnostic, $40.00 for the selenoid connector wire, $232.00 for labor, $32.00 for a shop fee??? and taxes. Being that I'm a female, I wanted to make sure that they weren't trying to run a scam on me, so I asked for the part back. It was corroded! My car runs great and starts fine every time. I even had Dodge run the scanner again to make sure the codes were gone and they were. Sorry I forgot to include photos. Will upload later. Good luck!
