There is a problem with the shifter lock system, either the solenoid in by the shifter, or some other component like the brake light switch or something to do when you step on the brake to shift.

Check your aux (secondary) battery. 2008 w164 will not shift if aux battery dead

The auxiliary battery is responsible for this happening. Got one from the dealer for $68 bucks changed it now she’s back to normal.

REPLACE THE MAIN BATTERY!!! The diagnostic computer test may not read it or be specific, but try replacing the main battery first. Unfortunately for me, we tried replacing other parts and after $1000, it ended up being the battery!!!

Below the D on your shift position is a small panel, use a small diameter screw driver push down thru the opening, when you push down it will allow you to shift out of park. Problem is no fixed there is a part dealer will have to replace.
