2008 ford throttle body and throttle position sensor

Asked by scaccs Dec 06, 2018 at 06:51 PM about the 2008 Ford Ranger XL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I took my car into autozone because of a check engine light.  Their machine
picked up the throttle position sensor as the problem.  Took it into ford and
they had us replace the throttle body and throttle position sensor.  2 months
later engine light is popping back on.  Back into auto zone and their machine
picks up tps again.  Take the truck back to ford and they say they had to do a
software update to communicate between new throttle body and computer.
Does this seem like a proper diagnosis and sequence of repairs?

After replacing or cleaning the throttle body really all that needs to be done is to disconnect the battery terminals and ground the positive lead for 10 minutes or so to clear memory from the modules. After that hook the battery back up, let the car/truck idle for ten minutes to relearn base idle and then go take it for a drive to learn shift points. No software update is needed to do this procedure. Usually the cause is a dirty throttle body or the sensor not the throttle body itself, Clean them with CRC throttle body cleaner not brake cleaner. Good Luck!

I don't trust dealers. I would have got the part at Autozone and put it in. If it didn't work, they would be somewhat obligated to explain. If it did work, the trip to the dealer would not have happened. And software updates are the responsibility of Ford and should be free.

I would not do anything based on what the idiots say at the local parts stores. They make $9.00 and hour and have little to no training and are usually clueless. Your best bet for a correct repair is the dealership.
