Lower engine damage in Chevrolet Silverado. Replace or sell?

Asked by Psee1 Dec 19, 2017 at 03:30 PM about the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2LT Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: General

While driving on an interstate, my oil pressure dropped out and i instantly had very loud knocking sounds coming from my engine. I pulled over and immediately shut it off, and got it towed to a dealership. They said that the oil pump failed, and now the lower engine is damaged, meaning the whole engine needs to be replaced.
They want $7,100 to replace with a GM motor, or  $4-5k for a used motor.

Should I replace the motor or sell it as is? I really wanted to get rid of this thing at some point, and if I put a new motor in it, I would still want to get rid of it sooner rather than later.

Prior to this catastrophe there were around 116,000 miles on it, and KBB valued it at around $12-13k for a trade in. Best offer I've gotten so far is $1,000 for how it sits right now.
What should I do?

1 Answer

I would install a new crate engine if I liked the truck. I would shop around on those prices.
