I have a 2008 silverado with a 4.3. I know the fuel filter is inside the tank, but can I change the filter without changing the pump?

The filter is part of the pump's sending unit. You can't change it and you shouldn't have too. If the filter is bad, the pump will clog and die pretty quick. Its easy to replace the whole unit, but the part costs about $200+

A parts store sold me a fuel filter. I'm going to be taking that back, obviously. Thank you

yep... unless you are having some specific problem. Don't worry about it... and don't put an inline filter into your car. Modern fuel injected cars are tuned to a specific fuel pressure which allows them to deliver optimal performance. If you start messing with it you'll be sorry.
