Coolant lught

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My coolant light came on. I checked the water and
it was fine. The light has been going on and off for 2
days. Today the light came on and stayed on and
my temperature gauge had quit working. Any ideas.
I am afraid to drive it

When you checked the coolant, was the engine real hot? Did it over heat? You might need to change the thermostat!

First thing to do is service the temperature gauge, if its not functioning you have no idea if its overheating. The engine can be ruined in a few miles of driving when overheated.Coolant light only indicates the level.

The engine never got hot. Yesterday morning the gauge was working fine. Then when I left work the coolant light was on and I noticed the gauge was not working. The water level is still fine and I don't dare drive it. Would a bad thermostat cause the temperature gauge to stop working?

No, the thermostat will NOT cause the temperature gauge to stop. Without inspecting your vehicle... it could be a coolant temp sensor. It's a simple repair, call and make inquires at 2-3 service shops on having it replaced or diagnosed very basic and simple! Excellent you didn't drive it! so many engines have costly repairs from people driving when overheated... you saved yourself a lot of money. Regards
