I am purchasing a 2008 BMW 335i with 54,000 miles. . Should I also purchase the extended warranty? Price for a 3-yr 36,000 warranty is $3,775 and covers what would be covered under a new car warranty.

If you're not a do it yourself kind of person, I would get the warranty. Just one trip to the BMW dealer will cost you a mint.
I would also recommend it. Even if you dont use it, I would say its a nice piece of mind incase something does happen.
And that is a good price for 3 year 36k. IF they keep up their end of the deal, if it was bought from BMW, good. If not, some aftermarket outfit, be careful the salespeople get a commission. Read the fine print. I seriously doubt it covers ALL the new car warranty, and excludes belts, hoses, brakes, stuff like that, that a genuine new BMW warranty does
They know the average price of repairs on carX over X miles and X time, double, triple, fourple it and charge that as premium. But can't fault them, they are not forcing it on you and they are trying to make an honest buck. Most of them anyway. My son had one he paid $2500 for 2 year/24k and it spun a rod bearing . They said it was from running it without oil, which is absurd, I taught him well. This was a Suzuki and the case ended up in court, He got his engine fixed, the Dealer said nobody from the warranty (it's actually an insurance policy) Company never even came to look at it. Just categorically denied it and ended up paying far more that they would have had they just had paid to fix it, was ordered to pay the rental for car he had to have to get to work for 33 days in shop to the tune of $1700+ repair.
