Life span of '08 335xi sedan

Asked by 1sttimebuyer Feb 21, 2016 at 12:01 PM about the 2008 BMW 3 Series 335xi Sedan AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi all,
A local dealership has a 2008 335xi sedan on the lot for $10,995 with
115,000 miles. I'm torn because the car is in / below my price range but is 8
years old with a lot of miles on it. I'm nervous about how long the car will
last me until i need to start putting in serious repairs which i know are
expensive on a BMW. Looking for advice / feedback on the situation.
Thank you!

Maybe this will help you decide. I agree that BMWs can be finicky and expensive to repair. It's over the normal miles by a little, but, I've seen worse instances. Do you really want this car? http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/2008/BMW/3-Series/Sedan-4D- 335i/Values

Walk away, it's a used BMW and it will likely be trouble.

FYI- these cars are very nice, however, there's a lot of really expensive parts on these cars. And, if something does go wrong, you could be spending a lot of money on repairs. The image factor is extremely high on BMWs. Just depends on what you want. Good luck. http://www.carcomplaints.com/BMW/335/2008/

As an alternative, I am considering a 2011 Hyundai Sonata, limited trim for $10,995 with 79,000 miles on it. Thoughts on the hyundai's life span and maintenance?

1sttimebuyer- Price is not out of line, but, take a look at the Car Complaints report, it says to "avoid this car". Have you considered a Toyota Prius or Camry?? They have an outstanding record of repairs. What exactly are you looking for? Or, maybe a 2010 or 2011 Subaru Outback? Here's my car, http://www.carcomplaints.com/Subaru/Outback/2010/ http://www.carcomplaints.com/Hyundai/Sonata/2011/ http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/2011/Hyundai/Sonata-4- Cyl/Sedan-4D-Limited/Values

1sttimebuyer- by the way, my other car is a 2009 Toyota Prius. Outside of regular routine maintenance, the car has been flawless. And my mechanic tells me that this car can easily go well beyond 200,000 miles without any major issues. I've met many taxi drivers, LYFT, etc. They have over 250,000 miles on those cars.

I'd stay away from a 2011 Sonata with higher mileage, especially. The engines in 2011-2012 models are known to give out very early (70k-100k range). Just look on the Hyundai forum. They're good cars, but you have to be careful with that you get.

Avoid the Sonata. I would look at Toyota or Honda for a reliable easily serviced vehicle.

old post but have to say...2008 335xi is one of the best cars ever. the so not a, not. if you are considering one of these 2 cars then go with the pos hyudai, you could not handle the 335.

The person above clearly doesn't own a 335i. If you are considering one, RUN. Colossal moneypit on wheels. Even dyi won't help you when you see the part prices and you realize you have to take apart half the engine bay something goes wrong, and lots will go wrong, all the time. Limp mode ftw

Well, not everyone wants a car that's perfectly reliable and bland. Some of us would rather have a fun car with a powerful engine that may be a little more expensive to maintain. If it's your only car, maybe not, for someone who wants a fun car, why not? I get that not everyone's a car enthusiast, but I am, and I see the appeal with these cars. For example, we recently bought a Volvo XC90 V8. Parts prices for the V8 are very expensive compared to the other engines in XC90s, but I'm happy to pay the price considering I wanted what I saw as the superior engine. It's smooth, powerful, responsive, and they're known to last, as one would expect from a Volvo engine.

Volvo is a much more reliable car than a BMW. The best way to own a BMW is with factory warranty. Buying one used is asking for trouble.

BMW's are exceptional precision automobiles. They require normal maintenance that people do not plan on and cannot afford so , should not buy. I bought a 2007 with 74000 miles on it with the understanding I was going to be forking in its 100k tune up. All new plugs and plug coils, new tires, rotors and brakes, new radiator, water pump and thermostat, new battery, 100,000 mile checkup ( belts and all new hoses) transmission flush and front and rear leak fixes ( 3,750) to new oils pan seal and new rear main seal. Big job but well worth it. Then I needed a seal for around my cables going into my transmission. Now that all of this is done it runs like an absolute dream. So if your in the market for a fine drive, repair it to its fullest by preventative maintenance and drive it like you stole it! It runs like its on rails....
