Overheating would cause the engine to fail, but $8,000 sounds on the high side. you should have had that car checked by someone before you purchased it...

I just got quoted $24K for a 2012 X5 6 Cylinder engine!

$24k as much as it is seems normal. I was quoted the same thing for my 2013 535i. I believe both models share the N55.

I was just quoted $24k for my 2013 528i also. I'm in the unhappy position of owing $17k. BMW won't deal with me unless I pay $3500 for a diagnotic/autopsy .... I think that money is better spent on having a used engine installed by a reputable German car mechanic.

Will a 2007 535xi engine work in a 2000 528i ?

I have a 2013 BMW 528I that just had an engined replaced by BMW. The vehicle broke down while I was traveling and of course it was out of warranty at the time. It gave no signs of issues as I had it serviced exactly one month prior to the date of the incident. The area BMW rep agreed to have the engine replaced and covered as long as they broke the original engine down. What was found in the engine was "shards of metal"...They couldn't explain it to me. Now that I have a new engine installed, do you know how long it's covered? I have concerns it will happen again.

BMWneverAGAIN how did you get BMW to replace the engine since the car was out of warranty. I have the same problem now and I'm working with BMW NA. I would like some pointers to get mine replaced. It seams like the same scenario.

BMWneverAGAIN I have that same engine and mine did the same thing but only has 48K on it. Can you please let me know what you did to get them to replace yours because they are being very difficult about it all.

I am sorry to hear that you all are having the same issue. My car broke down in the State of Alabama and I’m from North Carolina. My vehicle first began stating it had low oil pressure and would not allow me to check the oil level, it would continue to just stop at 15%. I then restarted the vehicle and the indicator went away for the low oil pressure. I drove about 10 more miles and drive train malfunction appeared and I pulled over immediately. When it was checked out by the dealer they stated they could not figure out why it occurred, but it was putting out many different codes. They then gave us two options... Pay 5000 for a possible fix by replacing the oil intake system, but if that didn’t resolve the issue we would be out that money and still required to purchase a new engine. They offered the new engine at 18,000...at that point I told them the vehicle would just sit on the lot as I was not doing either and would be contacting an attorney as a vehicle that was not even five years old and under 100,000 miles should not have engine failure with prior indications of issues. I had all my service records that BMW has always done the maintenance on it as required. I was given the number to BMW NA and told by the service rep that he has seen them work with someone before by contributing a portion to the repair. I then spoke with the service manager and asked for contact information for the BMW representative for that area. The service manager then explained that he would escalate on my behalf. It took a couple days, but I received a call that the regional rep agreed to replace the engine, but the engine in the vehicle first had to be broken down to see what the issue was. The outcome of that was that there were “shards” of metal in the engine and they could not figure out what caused it. After a month in the shop my vehicle was ready for pickup. It is now giving me a horrible vibration after the new engine installl and I have been told it’s because the “engine mounts” needed to be replaced. The tech at our local delearer stated that they were more than likely damaged when the original engine was removed, but no way to prove it. They are expecting me to pay for that repair, but I am in the process of having an attorney write a letter on my behalf to BMW NA and the National highway safety commission. I explained to the service manager in Alabama and in North Carolina that at some point there will be a recall as I had researched the issue and “shards” of metal in the engine has been a common issue with this model which was the first year this engine had been installed. Now, prior to me having 35,000 miles on it they had to replace one of the turbos also. I hope you all have success and stand your ground. I have read numerous individual stating they have had the same issue. With the new engine, I have a 2 year warranty with unlimited miles (apparently standard warranty BMW) gives for replacement parts.

BMWNever Again You experienced a timing chain failure. This is an issue affecting soooo many BMW's but they are brushing it under the rug because the cost to fix may bankrupt them. It's a huge deal. The fact they didn't mention "timing chain" is proof they are hiding it. Then they turn around and charge $22K for an engine that costs $4,500 from BMW. It's a racket and I'm going to expose it no matter the cost in time or money, they will be held accountable for this. This entire industry is not regulated properly which is detrimental to our society and we need to change that.

I am having the same problem. I have a 2013 528i The drivetrain malfunction came on in my vehicle. Took it to the shop and now it needs a new engine. Not sure what to do, but I should not have to pay for a new engine. I am right at 100,000 miles. I'm calling BMW also regarding this issue.

Well here is an update with the “new engine” that was installed back in October for me. Drive train malfunction and the new engine has about 5000 miles on it. I’m beyond over BMW, but I am going to do all I can to expose what is occurring. A class action suit needs to be initiated by all of us. I again am stranded away from home after a weekend getaway to Myrtle Beach, SC. I will update after the dealer looks at it this week. Of course it’s not at a delearship close to my home, so I am out travel expenses and additional hotel expenses after being without a vehicle for a month the last time. It disgusts me as I am making my final payment on the damn car this month and it’s not worth a dime.

Being an adult is overrated some days! I’m over it for today after speaking with BMW of Myrtle Beach (3xs), BMW of Tuscaloosa (2xs), and BMW of North America. It’s utterly disgusting that BMW certified service centers don’t support or back one another. I’ve been fed a whole lot of “bs” today, but I swallowed none of it. Yes, I had an engine installed 3 months ago and it’s already faulting possibly because “the most up to date software released for the engine wasn’t installed”...but it’s not practice to update the engines if they are not showing signs of issues so I’m responsible for paying $500.00 to see if updating the software fixes the issue. Of course the two year unlimited miles warranty doesn’t cover it....why would it??? The vehicle runs off the computer but isn’t part of the “engine”...that makes a lot of sense to me ! I was given the analogy of apple coming out with updates and when I commented that those updates are available for install and highly recommended to owners of the devices, then why would a new engine not be programmed to the most up to date software release...especially if these releases were made in 2014, 2015, and 2017....well we only update if a recall is done or if the engine shows signs of issues (makes no sense to me as something had to have occurred with this model engine for updates to be released) and in my case with a bill attached of $500.00. So BMW doesn’t feel it is in the best interest to advise their customers of this??? But then again I was assured by BMW of Tuscaloosa that with the install of the engine that the most current software would have been installed, but according to the service manager in Myrtle Beach “ he doesn’t know the service manager in Tuscaloosa, so what he states has no bearing!” Way of supporting the brand you each work for. What do the mechanically inclined on this forum think???

Hello everyone! I am having the same issue and I owe 17k on my vehicle. I found someone to replace the engine for 9k. However, I just bought this car 2 yrs ago and I am at the 110k mile mark. I bought it at 68k miles. Now I have a car just sitting there and I’m paying a car note on it. I’ve had my turbos replaced at the BMW dealer for 2500! They did a full diag. and it never once revealed an issue with the engine. No warning, no lights! Nothing! I can’t believe this! Not sure what to do. Buy a cheap vehicle to get around in or invest the money and get a new engine and pray that it last! Any advice?

nvest the money and attach to a class action law suite against corporate. You should be within the mileage for them. There are a few out there. Start calling around. Then file a claim in small claims court. Claim deceptive and unfair trade practices against the dealer. They should have revealed this issue and with all the documentation on line about it they should have known. Thing with unfair and deceptive trade practices, not knowing is not a defense and if you win, reward is tripled.

Have you attempted to escalate the issue to the service ma manager where the turbos were replaced? If so and he did nothing, attempt to reach out to the BMW district rep. If the service manager will not get you connected with them go to the BMW North America website and send and email. A representative will contact you with 48 hours. I would explain to them that you have done your research and the issue that is occurring has been common with this model and year. The engine installed was a new design and as we can see, hasn’t held up as it should. I would also write a complaint to the national highway safety commission. I unfortunately live in a small area and attorneys don’t get involved in this type of issue, so I have filed my complaints and continue to deligently watch for new issues reported on this year and model. At some point a major recall is going to occur, but likely after many have already had to invest in a new engine. I was at the point that I was not going to pay for a new engine as it’s not a guarantee fix. The one installed one mine faulted after approximately 5000 miles. Keep us posted on if you are able to come to some resolution with BMW. Also, if that vehicle has always been serviced by BMW certified mechanics you need to stress that as they are the trained individuals that should b able to detect the problems.

Yes, it did work with me back in October as I was adamant that I was not going to pay for a new engine when I had just had my vehicle serviced one month prior to the date this occurred with mine. It’s truly unfortunate that we are all having the same issues. Now, I will say everything has not been the same since the engine replacement as mine faulted with the new engine that was installed and the engine mounts were damaged during the process that I’m still dealing with as it was done at a dealership out of state and not the one I purchased the vehicle and have it regularly maintenanced. When it occurred on mine I owed less than 10k on it and was ready to just let it sit and take a hit on my credit as I personally couldn’t fathom paying 22k for a new engine on a vehicle that was less than 4 years old and has approximately 80k miles on it. From the entire experience I have had, I will never purchase this brand/make of car as they truly aren’t what they used to be.

I agree with everyone that say we should get together file class action suit. I am having the same problem and my car just went over the 100,000 mile. The dealer is saying bank 2 head pout of time. This should not be happening after 100,000 miles. I call BMW of North America. They are suppose to get back to me. Will keep everybody posted. This issue happen without warming. If everyone is serious about doing something about what BMW is doing, Please Please let me know. Bernard

An action does need to be commenced with regards to the issue with this make and model year. The issue with mine happened without warning and it was 1 month to the day I had it serviced. Complaints need to be filed by everyone with the National Highway safety commission also.

I bought a 2012 335i and have had engine problems ever since i got it. Bought it at 50k miles but started having more problems when it hit 60k. It was always small things like spark plugs and o2 sensors but last week the engine started knocking at idle and even worse under acceleration from 1.5k rpm all the way thru 5.5K and it progressively got worse as the days went by. finally i took it to bob smith bmw in calabasas and they said it has serious engine failure and contacted bmw about an engine replacement that will be covered by the certified pre-owned warranty. bmw said to replace it the same day they asked and the engine just got there today and they're saying it'll be ready early next week. Just thought id share my experience with this happening, the entire process has been a breeze and they offered a loaner car for the meantime.

I have a bmw 535I dealer installed new injectors that were leaking. I now have a engine knock they said I need a new engine now. I only have 126,000 miles on car would like to join all of you in a complaint to national safety council

Hi, I have a 528i close to 72K Miles, so far didn’t have a engine knocking problem, but the dealer came up with a bill of close to 12K after my usual service maintenance scheduled for the year. So it seems, my car needs a timing chain replacement, front axle replacement, thrust arm brushing replacement, seeping oil tank and few more. Wanted to know if these cover as part of extended warranty which goes up till 100K? And I hope all of you get your issues resolved with your beamers without having a hole in your pocket.

Another thing to note is- when the above estimate was given to me, the service advisor recommends me to trade in my car as the expenses are not worth to repair. are you serious,? It has run just 72K miles, is this what we can expect from BMW?

I need help asap! I had my engine replaced because it did that "runaway" thing where the engine blew itself out - everything has been replaced and now the mechanic can't get it run - the computer is overriding and shutting the car off. I've sent him the basic reset videos on youtube (hold the gas down with acc on key, etc.) and it's still not running. Does anyone know how to reset the entire computer? Please help, I have no way to the store and running low on supplies! It's been almost a month with no car :( I appreciate your help.

I have a 2013 528i and the warranty went out 6 months ago, I kept getting a drive train malfunction and the car without warning shut down and wouldnt come back on, I took a shot and had it sent to BMW, my rep contacted BMW NA sent pics and info and found that parts of the engine or shards went into my engine and blew my engine... Iiterally just got my car back last night, BMW replaced my engine with a brand new one AND installed a new turbo and i paid zero dollars. I think itall comes down to the advisor that you have, my advisor went out his way to take care of me.. My car runs better then the first day i bought it and I'm putting a platinum warranty on it next week

C.! That is great that you had success with dealing with your advisor and regional rep a you can see throughout this thread many have not been as fortunate as you and I to get an engine replacement. After I received the software update, I can say I have not had additional issues, but it seems to be a issue only when I travel out of my local area and I have not braved taking it further than a 30 mile radius sadly. Would you please share how you are able to purchase the platinum warranty this far out? I was told I could not purchase any additional warranty and the only coverage I have is the two years on the engine that is standard on all BMW replacement parts. I appreciate you sharing your experience.

Wow, seems like this is a common problem, with these cars. I purchased my certified 2011 550xi July 2015 with 45K miles, all oil changes and services were conducted at the BMW dealer, I always complained about the car consuming too much oil and I was told that it was normal. Car recently broke down with 85K miles, manufactures warranty expired June 2016 and all I was offered was a 10% discount on rebuilding the engine, which is a $8K cost. No water damage in the engine, just traces in shredded metal from unknown source. I still owe $20K on this car.

My husband and I are going through the same thing at present with our 2013 528i. It is sitting at Long Beach BMW (CA) as I type. We have metal shards in the engine when it had been seen there 2x before with this not found prior? brought in originally for oil pressure light. not found 2x before?? We owe $17,000 bought it used 3/2017 from a dealership that is closed. I am not sure of what warranty is left on it. I think I heard 8,000 for new engine with warranty and 11,000 with out one or turn it in and get something else. This makes my stomach turn, the car is 5 years old! BMW is disgusting me at present. I like the advise about BMW NA contact...our rep at the dealer is great, he may be doing that for us now. I feel so unlucky with cars. I feel I must take the BMWneveragain approach

Carla that is how my issue started initially with the low oil pressure indicator. I definitely would escalate up to BMW NA as it’s an obvious problem. When I initially postedast year it was very hard to find others with the same issues, but I do have higher miles on mine for it to be a 2013 (not excessive) which is why mine failed back last year. I was told by a service technician in Myrtle Beach, SC that they have seen a couple come in with that issue. Now the delearship I use in Wilmington, North Carolina doesn’t claim to have any knowledge of issues. It’s seema to be a cover up in my opinion. At some point it will become a national recall.

We are never buying BMW again. Husband was driving to work and car shut down. Fortunate he was not on the freeway. There are three BMW extended warranties for the 2013 528xi: timing/drive chain, pressure switch, engine oil line/turbo. Call BMW NA for details. BMW knows they have sold cars faulty engines and have discounted the engines for replacement significantly (mechanic said he could get on for $4k). There is a current class action lawsuit against BMW: Law360, New York (November 14, 2017, 6:41 PM EST) -- BMW is facing yet another class action in New Jersey federal court over engine defect claims, this one alleging that problems with certain models’ chain assemblies caused poor acceleration or sudden engine failure, according to a complaint filed Monday. "Eight drivers accused BMW of North America LLC and its German parent of concealing inherent design defects in the engines of model years 2012-15 BMW vehicles with the N20 and N26 direct injection turbocharged engines, including certain X3 SUVs, 528xi sedans and 328i sedans."

This chain is very interesting. Our 2012 528xi with 85,000 miles (purchased new) is experiencing these exact problems. Just spent $4,000 to correct oil leaks and now these issues. I'm patiently awaiting what the dealer is going to tell us, but it sounds like it is the same as what has been discussed here.

DoneWBimmers...I hope that you get your issues resolved. When. It seems to be a common problem around the 80k- 85k mile reading sadly! When it happened to me, I could find very little information on it. I was made to feel as if BMW did a kind gesture to appease me, when in reality we can see it’s a huge issue that needs to be addressed and everyone that has or is dealing with faulty engines need should be compensated accordingly. The new engine that has been installed on mine has had issue as mine vehicle currently is sitting in the shop with them trying to figure out the issue 10,000 miles since the install! It makes me sick to think that I have a paid off vehicle that isn’t worth anything with all the engine issues. Would be interested to hear the result of your matter and others with the issues.

wow, BMW NA gave me a case manager and I never talked to them. My husband talked to someone though 2 weeks ago who said they would get back to us. Its been 2 weeks and the dealer said they contacted them and offered 20% discount for a new engine...big deal. I am not pleased with that answer, that sucks for sure...looks like I am at a loss for this one :(

Carla: I would email BMW, NA if you have not. I initially waited on them to get in contact with me, but ended up sending an email and that is how I was able to speak with a representative. They then coordinated a field rep to connect with the dealer and that is how my second issue was resolved. I would be adamant with them that you are aware of some pending class action suits regarding this issue and that others have had their engines replaced. It’s a hassle as I was without my vehicle for a month the first time, but I refused to pay for something that I know I wasn’t at fault of as my vehicle had always been serviced by BMW. NagelRice has a current class action lawsuit in New Jersey and one has been filed in Canada for the engine issues. Make sure to file a complaint with the National Highway Safety Commission also. Everyone with these issues needs to. Not many have taken the time to do it.

My 2012 BMW 550 with 65,000 miles developed an oil burning issue which my local dealer was able to get resolved in 3 days and informed me today that BMW NA would pay all but $2,000 for a new engine installed. Considering I'm out of warranty I was thrilled. Go to a BMW dealer and have them check on a "good will" repair. You might be surprised. This is my 5th BMW and the first that has had major issues.

Wow! Mine is the same old story! 2013 528xi at 86,000 while driving over the Skyway bridge with my kids and have the drivetrain malfunction light turn on. Diagnosed as “timing chain off” BMW Reeves Tampa service rep denied this was a problem. He did not offer to help me. I called BMW Na and they refused to offer any goodwill assistance. I have reported to National Highway Safety commission and have read about the class action suits. This is my first and last BMW. I am in the same boat of owing more than it’s worth and been without a car for a month!!!

2011 550i I just took my BMW 550i in for a drivetrain malfunction with 73000 miles on it. It had the same timing off code they're telling me my exhaust Vanos solenoids are bad and they're hoping that fixes the timing problem but the mechanic just informed me that in October they're doing a recall on the engine but he's not sure to what extent the recall will be. does anyone else have any information on this upcoming recall on the engine? Any input would be appreciated .

HI! I have 2007 BMW 530I. I just purchased the car and it was driving without any issues, did the oil change and passed the smog right away. For about a week everything worked great. One day i was driving the car, again no issues, for a about less than an hour, parked it and left for about 20 mins. When I started the car again it became extremely shaky. I turned it off and started again, same problem occurred. Turned it off again and towed it to BMW service center. Car did not overheat, no warning lights were on. In service center I was told that the problem was a bad battery, and that replacement should fix the problem. After battery replacement car was still shaking, I was told, that control unit and steering column needed replacement. My car was at their service for about 3 days just for diagnostics, that didn't make any sense. I went to talk to service manager, also provided him with copy of my correspondence with service advisor and explained my concerns. He refused to provide faults list or any explanation, threw self written diagnostic report in to my face, knocked over the chair and left the room... Director came and said to take my car and get out from there. It was at Pacific BMW in Los Angeles, so you know, where not to take your car. Contacted BMW NA, where was told, that they are not going to do anything. I picked up my car from them, and towed it to another store, where they diagnosed absence of compression in the 5 cylinder. Hard to believe, certified service center could possibly miss that problem, unless it occurred because of them.. Been to a couple stores no one could tell what happened to the car. Had my engine replaced to the different used one at a different store. Car was running fine, but P0050 and P0155 faults occurred. Was told that after they replace the oxygen sensor problem should be gone. Went to check my car today, those codes were gone, but 5 cylinder started misfiring. Compression, spark plugs and coils are fine. Any thoughts or recommendations much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, I have a 2011 BMW 535i xdrive, engine died and towed to BMW dealer, they told me engine is seized !!, oil level fine and no metal in oil. No warning light at all and the car has only 62,000 KM , BMW NA answered my email stating warranty had expired ?, I knew that but had hoped for some kind of an explanation and remedy for this, this must be a serious BMW engine problem they will not admit to, I would love to get involved with a class action suit against BMW NA.

Update... I was told I need a new engine. The M-20 new engine was quoted to us to be $7,500 for the engine and about 25-30 hours of labor, at rates close to $200/hour by BMW would result in over $13,000+ to replace. (My contact at the BMW dealer is a brother in law of a close family friend gave me off the record details and said BMW had been selling this engine for $15,000 and when they saw all the problems, they are now selling it for $7,500. Because my 2012 528xi had a KBB value of under $10,000, I was not going to dump $13,000+ into it to have it still be worth $10,000. I was offered $4,000 as-is with known problems - car was clean with exception of minor damage on bumper and 2 of 4 run-flat tires were replaced and didn't match the other 2 tires (different brand). I took the $$$ and ran. Never thought I'd spend $55,000 on a car in 2012 would be worth $4,000 in 6 years. This was our 3rd BMW 5-series, after a MB E-series. Really love them when they are new. Sad that this happened to us and all of the others. I can't support BMW's anymore and have told my story to everyone I know that has a BMW. We are new owners of a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee very different from the "ultimate driving machine" but nice, new technology.

@DoneWBimmers - how did you get 4K for your car as is? Husband wants to know - says he would sell ours for that in a second. We are sick of looking at it in our driveway - frustrating.

A family friend who owns a automotive repair center has a mechanic who is a specialist who works on German cars told his brother about the car, and he bought it. Right place at the right time. My Jeep dealer offered me $2,000 for trade that the wholesaler would have purchased it for.

Looks like I am about to become a member of the 'never again" club. My 2013 528i decided to stop running at 134k miles. It is sitting at the dealer now about to undergo a $500 diagnostic check to see if the engine is still good. After reading the posts about the symptoms I could self-diagnose what they are going to tell me. I have two payments left on the car that is about to become a garage ornament. Not willing to work out $$ to have this silliness continue. Class action sounds like the tribe I may be joining. Have not spoken to the rep but it is on my list. Ugh. Appreciate the insight and sharing in this forum. I was ticked that the 'ultimate driving machine' was not.

my 2012 528i just have drivetrain malfunction issue at 115k miles. this one was bought at 23k with certified warranty. i'm still pay the note 13k more to go. It just death 2 days ago, after 1 day diag. the rep. told it was timing chain issue a turbo needs to be replaced and cost $12,576.24. Any advise please! Thanks

Amazing how BMW has gone from the "Ultimate Driving Machine" to the "Ultimate No-driving piece of $&!#*" I also have a 2005 x5 that had a "coolant" issue. I put a few thousand in it to fix it thinking "well its cheaper than a new car." After they "fixed" the coolant issues, I drove it around and called them to tell them that the air didn't seem to be working. They replied that I should drive it around and give it some time to cool down that it was so hot outside. I had been driving for two hours! And next......the coolant light came on. I took it to another import guy and he says I need a new engine. Ugh! I'm selling it for nothing just to unload. Too bad BMW has lost its place in the car world. I'll head over to audio or Mercedes.

Last week I had a low oil pressure indicator and then a drive train malfunction 30 seconds later. I pulled over and the car would not restart. I had it towed to a shop and they told me my entire engine needs replaced and it would cost 8,000! I bought the car at 40,000 miles preowned at South Bay Ford in CA. I did not purchase a warranty. (Wish I would have now) I have 92,000 on my car and still owe 10,000 on it. I have had all of the regular maintenance done and thought my car would run forever. I am contacting BMW next and will let everyone know on my results.

I have a 2012 328i and same thing happened to me drivetrain light came on so I pulled over and I turned it off went to turn it back on wouldn’t start so had to get it towed and and had to wait a week just got an answer today there replacing my whole engine and also paying my tow

Driving down a major highway last night, my oil pressure indication light came on, then about a minute later the drivetrain malfunction occurred and I lost power, luckily I was able to get to the side of the highway, but waited for 2 hours for a tow. My car was a lease for me which I then bought at the end with an extended warranty. I’m hoping that the warranty will cover what seems like a very expensive repair at only 62,000 miles. I’ve never had an issue until now and am sad as this has been a great car until this point. I’m thinking I need to get rid of it and run. Has anyone had this with a CPO and does that coverage cover all this?

I had the same issue with my 2013 528ix, 88 K miles, was just in for service the week before and had vehicle check done, the next week, low oil pressure and drivetrain malfunction due to timing belt issue, BMW NA offered new engine, turbo, cat converter for 7K. Had no choice but to have the engine replaced. Always dealer serviced and this is what happens. This is my 5th BMW and I love the brand, but not so happy now. Got the car back last week and runs great. Hoping for the best

The dealer has been great and I am so happy that I bought the CPO warranty when I bought my car out of the lease. The car will indeed need a new engine and the dealer said the warranty will cover it. I was told to expect about two weeks until I get it back. I’m hoping that this is it for issues as I’d like to keep the car given the new engine.

So, went to pick up the car on Saturday and it shook when I put it in drive. I refused the car and left it at the dealer. Today I received a call that it was ready and that the valvetronics had to be updated and had been so the car was good to go. When the service manager was getting the car, it was shaking again. They then determined today that the car needs a new transmission. New engine block and now a new transmission. I am happy I have the CPO warranty as if this was not covered, I think my frustration level would be a lot higher. I really wonder about the process for others and if I hadn't had the warranty and had been the original owner if the car would just be a lawn ornament. I am beginning to question my wanting the car back at all, but am concerned that the value with these issues has dropped considerably.

Unfortunately you have no choice but to get a new engine. Has it been serviced by BMW and do you have all the records? You can try going to BMW NA to see if they will cover this, you will have better luck with all servicing by BMW. I also think people need to report to the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration so these can be tracked and hopefully recalled. Amjad I suggest that you address it with the service manager of the BMW service department that your vehicle is at and make them aware that you know of many issues with this model years engine. I was one of ghe first to post about the issue over a year ago and so many more have come forward. Class action lawsuits have been commenced, but that does not help you at this point. Have them escalate to the regional BMW rep for your area. That is how mine got covered for the most. Also, file a complaint with the national highway safety commission.

I have just experienced a similar issue with my 2013 528i with 97,000 miles. I was driving when a notice came on stating low oil pressure. I contacted my dealer service dept and was told you are near your 10,000 mile check up so it is probably a quirk. I continued to drive with no other messages. 4 days later I am on a major expressway when the same low oil pressure came on immediately followed by Drive Chain malfunction, maximum drivetrain output not available. I managed to get off the highway and the car died. Right now I am dealing with my BMW dealer who claims not to know about the class action suit and has offered to pay $10,000 of the 14, 374.00 charge. My feeling is number one we could have been killed as I was doing 70 miles/hr when the warning came on and secondly, I researched the cost of the engine to BMW and it is around $4300. So why should I pay for their engine cost. Met attorney contacted the law firm handling the 800 million dollar class action suit, and I have added my name to it also. 2011 BMW 535 Xi I owe $11,000 and I was quoted $23,000 for engine repairs. No signs of any engine problems just one day gone. Had it at two different dealers in previous three months and no diagnosis from computer of any engine problems. I have owned a BMW for the last 25 years and never again after this one. How does a 2011 need a new engine?!?!? I am fighting this one also!

It was most likely the timing chain if they hadn’t previously diagnosed anything. The timing chain snaps and sends shards to the engine. Good luck. You may need to engage BMW NA and hopefully it has been serviced at the dealer. Good luck!!

Brandon, the dealer replaced the engine and a new turbo. I negotiated the cost of repair from $14,374 to 2300.00. It took writing a letter to the CEO BMW North America, District Manager of BMW in my area and meeting several times with the General Manager and Service Manager of my dealership.

Amazing to see how many are having the same exact issue. Going through the same thing with my 2013 528xi at 77k miles. Drivetrain malfunction warning, oil pressure indicator and loss of function within a mile or two of start up. I was told that my timing chain ruptured and I have flakes of metal throughout my engine. Quoted 14g for the repair... Dealer in Richmond, Va. tried to tell me that this was caused by getting my oil changed at Jiffy Lube! Thought I was the unluckiest guy around, just bought the car at 60k. Looks like there’s a few of us! I will try reaching out to bmw regional management, adding myself to the class action suit and file an ntsb complaint. My 2012 528i Just dies when I was on the freeway.Good thing it was late at night.Got it towed to the shop and was told timing chain broke affecting my engine.Been given an 8k quote.I just hit a 100k and for a brand that prides itself as “the ultimate driving” machine, this shouldn’t be happening.Definitely adding my name to this class action suit.

Sorry to hear you had the same problem. I sent letters to the North American BMW CEO, the regional manager via Fed Ex outlining the problem and noting the class action suit against BMW. My first quote from the dealership to replace the engine was $14,374.00. Their first offer back to me after I met with them and told them of my letters and that I was aware of the law suit was $10,000 credit. I continued to communicate with BMW corporate and finally paid $2300 for the engine and a new turbo also. I read where others had a problem with the turbo later after the engine replacement. My 2013 528i just died March 14 2019. "Low Oil Pressure" warning as I exited the highway and 2 blocks later the "Drive Train Malfunction" warning. Luckily I was able to pull into a gas station and car would not turn on again. Had it towed to BMW of Arlington. They called me on Monday needing authorization for them to drop oil pan to further investigate issue charging me $1600. Service rep. stated could be as simple as replacing timing chain at $5600 or new engine at $15000. I get online and find this discussion board. SMH! Will see what technician says tomorrow.

I have a similar issue, with a twist. In Nov 2018 took my 2013 528i into the dealer to have a noise (whine/squeal) checked out - specifically said it was when I was NOT braking, but driving at a slow roll. It was under the extended service warranty at the time and they said it was the brakes. I protested since I drive mostly highway miles and the noise does not occur while braking. Service adviser said it was "brake dust" and to ride or use the brakes hard because they are close to the wear level they can replace under my service agreement (which I thought was up in April 2019). Brought it in for scheduled oil change & complained about the noise again in mid-January 2019. Again, adviser said it was brakes, but this time miraculously they now had plenty of pad left on them and there was nothing I could do about the noise. Found out my service agreement expired 01/02/2019 - convenient. Noise still happens, even noticeable at 40 mph. A few weeks later, driving on the freeway I accelerated and got the "Low Oil Pressure" warning light - pulled over - turned car off then on again and checked the oil pressure on the system and it was fine. Carefully drove home with no issues. Drove for 2 weeks with no issues - then the "Low Oil Pressure" warning light again. Pulled over and turned it off/on again - warning light was gone, oil pressure was ok - but this time took it to an experienced mechanic, recommended by our previously retired BMW mechanic. He said the readings are for low oil pressure and that the pump and chain should be replaced and it is a known problem for this engine. But recommended I take it to the dealer - it has always been serviced by the dealer - to see if they would fix it under warranty instead of paying him to do it. Dealer said they would check the issue but that the warranty was only extended 7 yrs/70k miles - mine is at 95k miles. Service adviser just told me "it is the oil pressure sensor and valve... $744.05 to replace. The engine mounts are broken. $1,209.67 to replace." The experienced mechanic said that a bad sensor would give a reading that was electrical, not mechanical. Just seems to me like they are hiding something and it is actually the issue everyone else on this thread is having. Not sure what to do at this point. I don't want to pay the dealer to fix it, only to have the chain break to pieces and ruin the engine. So frustrated!

You should take this issue to BMW of AMERICA and directly to the CEO. Send a certified receipt letter outlining your problem. You should also send this letter to your regional BMW Representative which you can find by googling on line. Your engine is going to have a problem because what you have experienced is exactly what happened to me before my engine seized. I would also ask for a meeting with your dealers service manager and dealer manager or owner. There is an 800 million dollar class action suit right now against BMW for this issue. BMW's only concession to was increase the warranty on these affected cars to 70,000 miles. You can google BMW class action suit on line for defective chain drive failure. Good luck!

I have a 13 528i and had the same exact issue and then the timing chain went, engine blocked and I’m now in a new engine just like everyone else. Luckily I had the CPO and it was all covered, but each phase was a fight. You need to contact BMW NA, document everything and get them to fix the timing chain before it’s catastrophic. My mounts did go also after the engine replacement and it’s my understanding it’s common. Parts and repair were $368 for the mounts which may have been a discount. When doing the timing chain they should do the mounts too and that too should be covered. Also join the class action as values o these have been hit with a Honda Accord of the same year being worth more. Good luck and keep us posted as this is so frustrating and not right.

***Update*** My 2013 528i according to technician had timing chain disc failure which they showed me pictures of in the oil pan. My service rep sent BMWNA request to replace engine. Due to having 80k and being 10k passed the extended warranty BMWNA only covered partial replacement of engine. My balance was $4k. To make matters worse, I go to pick up my vehicle and find my bumper damaged. It had what looked like a license plate impression on it. Now they scheduled an appointment with their body shop to repair.

I have a 2013 528ix that just this same thing. powertrain failure and then low oil warning. pulled over and turned off engine. Then no start. The tow company had very hard time getting it loaded and unloaded because they could not get it in N.

Thankfully I had an extended warranty on my car before this could happen to my 528Xdrive. I have them replaced now. Not sure what is the probability of seeing this issue again on replacement parts, given there is no more warranty and mine is hitting 81K miles now.

WOW! So it is not just me. I have a 2013 BMW 535i and while driving I get a message on the dashboard saying “Drive train malfunction”, I pulled over immediately and within a minute the car shut down and didn’t turn on again. I had to get my car towed and now they are saying the engine is seized. My car only has 70k miles on it and regular oil changes were done.

The problems this with this model/year does not seem to stop. I posted initially when I had the Drive Train malfunction and now the fuel pump is giving a problem. It’s very concerning when you are driving a vehicle and it just begins to stall and cuts off before you are able to pull over to the shoulder. This occurred with our lovely 2013 528i that has 103,000 miles on it. There is absolutely no way to put his car in neutral manually to push it out of the roadway, which is very concerning when you are driving on a major roadway....it can cause for a major accident and I can’t believe that it’s the design of this model. So I am waiting to hear what the cost is to fix the fuel pump system that gave no warning of issue to begin with. I have it being looked at a reputable service center in my area who is well aware of all the engine issues. If you feel your vehicle beginning to hesitate or it is giving messages for the low oil pressure or a message regarding the fuel system...pull over immediately (that’s if the computer actually gives you a warning). I did speak with the Attorney handling the class action suit out of New York and I had advised him that I initially started this thread when my engine failed and that the issue continues. He asked me to provide him with the information to access this information, so he is aware of the continued issues individuals are experiencing as I gave him the link a month or so ago.

Has anyone with a replaced engine had issues with their cars overheating? Last week we were coming home from a four hour drive and with an hour left to the drive the car overheated. I called the dealership and they were no help, they told me to wait and add coolant. I waited, made it to an AutoZone, added coolant and got home. There are no leaks that I can see where I park, but that has me concerned. I took the car to CarMax and they offered me 10,500 for my 2013 528i-I’m on the fence as I got the car new so know what I paid originally. That makes me sick too.

Yep... 2013 528i xDrive. 102,000 miles and engine needs to be replaced with no warning. The car turned off on the highway and thankfully was able to drift to the shoulder. Dealer wants 18k to replace the engine. I have been in contact with BMW NA with all of my service records and they basically said sorry. I have also been reaching out to the class action lawyers for advice. I am hesitant to sell it in case there is a award in the class action suit. It really is a shame, it is a nice car and fun to drive. The problem is, I cant! Thank you BMWneverAGAIN for your diligence. I have been on the BMW Facebook page voicing my opinion too.

Have you spoke with the service department manager of where you have had it serviced and the district representative? If not, I highly recommend you attempt that route. It’s unfortunate to be in that position as selling it “as is” won’t net anything and even with it running, the value isn’t anything near what it should be. Also, make sure to file a complaint with the National Highway Safety Commission.

I am so sorry that has happened to you. Sadly, my 2013 528i was recently appraised at CarMax for $10,500. These cars have dropped so much in value that I worry it will flood the market with people with limited resources buying these used not knowing that they are time bombs with the timing chain. I wish BMW would do buybacks like VW had to do with the Jetta Diesels.

I experienced and have posted on this site before, the same problem with my 2012 5 Series. I negotiated with the Dealer Service Manager, Dealer Manager and also sent Fed Ex letters to the CEO of BMW North America along with a letter to the District BMW Manager. I actually received a call from the CEO’s office representative who spoke with my dealer and helped me to resolution to replace my engine. The original quote was $14,400 and I ended up paying $2300 and also got a new turbo as well. I read where the turbo became an issue after engine replacement so I demanded a new one. Frankly I should not have paid a nickel but after one month I wanted my car back. It as you all have stated has been devalued despite the “new” engine. Having been a BMW customer for over 30 years it will be difficult to ever buy another. I also added my name to the class action suit. Good luck, keep fighting. Do not back down. The Dealer and BMW knows this is not right. I threatened to take it to a the media too. Do not get mad, negotiate in a firm business like manner, it may work.

Well, after posting several messages about my engine replacement 2012 528i and negotiations with BMW corporate, regional and dealer, my car stopped on a busy highway this Saturday, no warning! The Saturday before it was in a car wash interior being detailed and would not start, jumped it several times got it running and drove to nearest BMW Dealer where it died again, ran diagnostics and they told me battery was dead. Again no warning. Then as I started out to say, my car died again the following Saturday 6/30 and was told today bad fuel pump. BMW claims none of these issues have to do with the engine seizing back on 12/31/18. Hard to believe. I have once again contacted BMW CEO office North America. Am also going to email the attorneys for the class action suit which I already have my name on. Also going to post an update on the National Safety board. Enough is enough. I feel like I am having to replace everything in the bloody car and fear for my life every time I drive the car when it actually starts LOL

I posted above about issues with my 2013 again and it being linked to the fuel pump. I didn’t even attempt to deal with BMW this time, but would like to know if anything goes your way. I took it to a reputable service center that solely works on BMWs and they found the following (I had them make the repair and it seems to be doing fine. I don’t trust it enough to drive much, so it’s pretty much a driveway ornament unless my husband decides to brave driving the unreliable driving machine): Completed diagnosis scan and found faults stored in DME for high pressure fuel pressure and fault in EKP (Fuel pump control unit) for control voltage too low. Vehicle starts and runs with no issues. No faults restored. Faults indicate a problem with the low pressure fuel pump feeding the high pressure pump. Recommendation Replace in tank electric fuel pump and thoroughly road test to verify repair

wow, this just happened to me with my 2013 528i with 84k miles. no warning and then all of a sudden oil pressure and drivetrain malfunction. Had my car towed to BMW of Atlantic city and was told I need a new motor and would cost 14k and bmw would cover 1/2 the cost. I believe they should pay the full price. I always had my vehicle serviced and just was in for coil and plug replacement in april. This is complete crap. I want to be included in the class action suit in NJ as well. How do I contact someone? It's a class action suit, you will be included if you have a qualifying car. Any of the cars with the N20 and N26 engine are included. Good news is the lawsuit is nearly 3 years old and the next action is that BMW must answer the 412 or so complaints against them by 7/31/19. Once that is filed we should have an idea what the next step is. It is HIGHLY unlikely that BMW will want to go to a jury trial for this. The couple lawyers I have spoken to think that they will either extend the warranty to 150k, since that is the first mention of a timing chain interval in the service manual, or do a buyback. The bad news is that this can drag on for a long time in the court system! My car has been towed home, it is in the driveway under a cover just waiting for the legal system to do its thing. Oh, and for me to finish paying the loan off. FILE A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA ABOUT YOUR CAR! Get the attention of the government.

Joining you all with the same problem on my 2013 BMW 528i X drive. Drivetrain malfunction light on. Can't figure out the problem. Then on Saturday last week, the car just died. My mechanic said that the timing belt jump off track, causing the engine failure!! I guess I'll contact BMW NA to see if anything they can do... No warranty.

I have a 2016 528i x drive that had the same problems at 47000 miles. I brought it new from bmw. Engine oil pressure comes on followed by the drive train malfunction light. Luckily for me I had 3000 miles left on my original 50000 warranty. Dealer replace engine and drive shaft guibo. Had no problems getting done probably cause it was still under warranty

Wow, I just found this thread and the similarities to my case are incredible. My 2013 528i with a little over 100k miles gave the low oil pressure code about a month ago -- after years of consistent and regular service at various BMW dealerships. I took it to the BMW dealer in Asheville, NC and they replaced some kind of control valve and changed the oil (total charge = $900-1,000). One month later, I'm driving down highway I-40, 18-wheelers whizzing past me right and left, and I get the oil pressure warning again. 30 seconds later, the drivetrain warning comes on -- and then the car completely loses power and shuts down. I barely made it into the emergency lane alive. Had it towed to the dealer -- they said when they serviced it a month ago for the low oil pressure issue, they had no way of knowing that something was apparently "coming apart" inside the engine. At any rate, engine is completely ruined, and my only option is a new engine for ~$15k -- which is considerably more than what the car was worth before the first oil pressure warning happened and everything was seemingly fine. It feels like virtually overnight the car went from completely fine to literally a 4,000 pound paperweight.

Same problem so many others have had. Oil pressure light, then drivetrain warning, then car stalls. BMW says needs new engine. Quoted 16k for a new N20 engine. They said BMW would cover some, they would cover some, and my cost would be 6k. I got less than 6 months our if this used car. Unreal. It is at less than 80 k miles

My 2014 318 m sport engine failed last saturday. Was taken to independent garage who told me timing chain had failed and wrecked engine. Was quoted at least 3000 euro to rebuild engine. I am less than a year into a 5 year finance deal 300 a month. I was refused credit from bank to cover engine rebuild as I only recently got a large loan for home improvements. Was ringing everyone from the garage I bought it from 10 months ago to the financiers trying to find a way out of this catastrophe. Was advised that BMW do a goodwill policy and I should chance it. So I rang my local BMW dealers. They said there is a cost of 1000 euro to diagnose the issue and BMW will pay this back if they do decide to cover the repair. I felt it was a long shot and I decided to gamble the 1000 in the hope that they would cover the repair. I could just about scrape together 1000. I provided the service history to BMW which had been provided to me when I bought the car..I hadnt serviced it personally as I only bought it 10 months ago and had driven 10000km so far. Was going to put it in for a service soon. I rang a day later and was told I didn't have a good case for this goodwill costs cover. Previous services had not been carried out in BMW dealers. I had bought the car privately. I was a new BMW customer. It was long out of warrenty and had mileage of over 100000miles. The next day I was told a bee engine would cost 14000 euro. Car was a write off. The dealers hadnt gotten word back from BMW yet at this point regarding a decision. I gave them the mother of all sob stories at this point. But it was genuine. I was fucked, saddled with 300 euro payments for a car that is essentially a write off. Not even the money to buy a cheap second car. I am just about getting by. A second baby on the way next month. In the process of fixing up new house. That car was a big investment for me. Over 4 more years to pay it off. In my local garage they said they would do their best to get me the goodwill but I was not optimistic but praying I'd at least get a contribution. This had been a very very stressful few days a real lowpoint for me in terms of money. But also I thought I had gotten a quality product that would last. Absolutely sickening.. So I got the call from the dealers today. BMW had come back to them with a decision.. They are covering the full 14000 euro cost including labour. My 2013 640i, had oil pan gaskets, tie rod ends, and other repairs done at 90,000 miles...at around 92,000 miles, I hear knocking at startup, definitely wasn't an oil leak because that was just done. Went to independent repair shop, I was told that I needed an engine replacement like all of you . Thank God I had an aftermarket warranty, it's been two months now, haven't got my car back yet.

Engine seized on and 2013 335 at about 70,000 miles. I was offered $4000 to sell it as is... or buy a new engine, or a used one. The cost would have been anywhere from $8000 to with the install for a used engine, to $25,000 for a new one. I assume the dealer who sold me the car for $20,000 put regular oil in it or lied altogether about changing the oil. I took it apart in my garage and rebuilt it; the process lasted few months because there were no crankshaft bearings to my specifications, the only place I could get these was China, and I was not in rush either. The oil pump was a mess as well. Parts alone, including all the bolts I had to buy new, gaskets, and the timing chain was already out so I changed that too, and did cost me about $3,000. Oils were not cheap, but I changed anything that was due, including oil filter gaskets. The car ran like new afterwards, but few months later one injector gave up. Purchased new and programed it (easily), and now it purrs like a fat cat. My son is driving it every day. I was worth the effort. Beware – many drivetrain malfunctions dealers do not know how to fix or lie about. I have 3 BMW’s, all N55’s and on two of them I had CEL and Leith BMW in Raleigh could not diagnose it after I left the car with them several times. I found the answer in a forum! It was a simple $60 fix - the turbo vacuum solenoid tube has a tiny washer near the valve (very unusual!!!) and that caused the problem. Changed solenoids and BAM! Like new again. You almost never need a new engine. A good mechanic can change the top or bottom as needed, and the crankshaft can be turned, and oversized bearings can be used without any problems.

111k miles 2012 528ixDrive, Regular service, oil changes etc. Engine started to sound like it was eating itself. Turns out the timing chain and the turbo oil line are bad and now need a whole new engine according to BMW dealership $33.5k+tax to replace. Past the class actions as far as I can tell. Has anyone gotten BMW to cover the fix to their engines in the last year? (like they were for a while...) Otherwise I would take 4k in cash for it. It still can drive, but sounds awful.
