car shut off while driving
Asked by GuruTLCCN Jun 28, 2018 at 04:12 PM about the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu LS FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
2009 Malibu LS
Got in the car and it started up. Turned the air on and put in drive to drive off
and car killed. Everything shut completely down. Got out of the car and
checked the battery cables and they were fine and got back in the car and
tried
to start it and it started right up. What could have caused it to shut down like
that?

This is happening with 2013 Malibus and is very widespread. Except its happenit's happening is driving! Replaced battery and did not fix. My research led me to replace the lead cables to the battery. Should be. A GM recall but they are ignoring it! Steering wheelocks up while driving. Electronics shut down one by one and instrument panel starts giving multiple errors! I haven't gotten my car back yet but I hope it's fixed!
My car is doing the exact same thing that yours is. I mean from the steering wheel locking up and all that. I guess to start I'll change my cables out. Thank you for posting
My car is doing the same no answers to why...maybe I'll try replacing my cables as well. Thanks for the tip!
It's a sensor. This happened to me 2x since I bought it. Theres 2 parts to it. I cant remember the name of it. My electronic systems would go nuts. Car would just shut down. I had to have it towed. It's a cheap easy fix too.
Can you find out what sensors fixed the problem? Thanks
Here's a pic of the box
It's not a sensor. It's the battery cables. It's 2 different problems. If it's a sensor, it will come up on their diagnostic. If it is not coming up, its the battery cables. For people who have taken their cars in arms gotten no answers, outs the cables, not the sensor.
The reason it keeps happening to you is because outs not a sensor and they likely keep fixing the wrong thing. The problem is sporadic so people think it's fixed when it isn't. Do not waste money on sensors unless you see the diagnostic error
Guys, look into the recent GM recall on defective power steering pumps and electric fails when turning... My brother's Malibu turns off while driving but only when he engages a turn or uses his blinker. Shitty titty and GM will not look into it until someone dies and they get sued due to their problem.
This is a damn shame, this just happened to me on my way home. The car shut completely off while I was on the highway. It literally had to cruise to the side and turn it off and start it again. Besides that it keeps blinking off when i use my blinker, about to turn and now just while I'm driving period. This car is going to get me and my kids on a bad accident.
Ms. Get your car in the shop and have them change both battery cables before that car gets your family and your daughter killed. I went round and round with GM and they refuse to acknowledge this is a serious problem. The customer service agent I was talking to literally told me that she had no access to how many times this complaint has been lodged although she was confident and telling me that this was not a widespread problem that needed to be recalled. I've honestly thought about seeking out an attorney to find out if they can go after GM over this. You are right it will take someone getting killed or a family member getting killed before they will do anything.
Same thing happend to mw a month ago!! Car just shut down while driving uber at night with a Rider!! My engine light was on for. A while BEFORE That. Went to the Auto Zone code was P0014. My negligence for ignoring the issue I'll admit. But Im glad im not alone. When i do get an official diagnostic I will update yoi guys!!
GuruVMWTG, the GM mechanics couldn't figure out the problem. I had to do the research and tell them what to fix! After I told them they checked and said the one cable was spongy and it should have been tightly wrapped. No problems since the cables were changed in July.
We have the same thing with our 2013 Chevy Malibu. It stalls out and starts right back up and other times just stalls out and stays dead. Now enough of us can get together and Sue GM maybe they will fix the problem or at least reported sincerely JW.
Chevrolet Malibu 2018 LS. 10/21/2018 the car shut down completely second time at 41 Lee Burbank Hwy Revere, MA 02151. The first time it was on 10/07/2018 on the road near 519 Harrison Ave Boston, MA 02118. The car was de-energized completely. All the systems including emergency lights, OnStar support did not work. The doors and the trunk were blocked. The car towed to “Quirk in Braintree.” I reported the issue to Quirk Certified Service 444 Quincy Ave Braintree, MA several times. The cause was not defined and fixed. When AAA team recovered the car with the starting device, the battery level was 13.5.

I'm having the same problem with my 2013 Chevy Malibu, This car is a death trap! My kids refuse to ride in it,They call it the Ghost car because it controls itself basically, I have called GM and they refuse to acknowledge this problem. ..I guess until someone gets killed!!!
same here except its a 2018. noone cares at Gm Corporate. Cant even get a rental. 3 dealerships looked at the car. 2 called GM engineers and they acknowledged theres a problem but no fix... i just pray it doesnt turn off at a railroad crossing.
mikexxxxx that is exactly whats happening to.me? any resolution for you yet? i also have the 2018.
Get you battery cables changed. That is the problem! I had mine changed in July (due to researching what others did) and it has not happened again. My mom almost hit a parked car when this happened while driving my car! I reported to GM which was a complete waste of time as they could care less and won't until someone gets killed. Its possible people have and didn't live to tell about it! I thought about contacting an attorney! Change battery cables and you will fix it!
For jared They stated (Cert Serv. Chevy Quirk) that this is due in-car camera. I used AUTO VOX while driving. But I used the same camera with Chevrolet Cruze 2017 /the same configuration/. I removed the camera and I haven't had any issues since October 21st (the last one). The question is - can I use any device plugged in the cigarette lighter? Honestly, I'm afraid to use any.
If all of you that have experienced this safety issue would file a complaint with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) it may add up to a needed investigation. You all pay taxes, take advantage of this benefit! https://www- odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ My daughter's Chevy Captiva just died on her in traffic. She is scared to drive the car now and is using uber. I plan on putting in a complaint on NHTSA myself.
I’m having the same issues with my 2013 Chevy Malibu. I’m gonna try what Terri said tonight and I’ll update you guys soon

Any updates Shaneta? My issue is when the car runs about 20+ miles, it only shuts off when I'm at a stop light/sign. I can keep it running if I shift it to neutral. Then shift back to drive. GM can't figure it out, no DTC and they replaced throttle body, MAF, Intake gasket, airfilter, and MAP
Did any of you try replacing the ignition switch?????????
Christopher answered 5 years ago
Ignition switch was good, although I did find out that the long fuel trim was higher than 13% and that's when it would cut out. Checked air filter, actuator even replaced the intake manifold seal. Still having the problem of vehicle running fine on the highway for over 20mi then still shuts off when stopped at light or sign. For now I just shift to neutral so the car wont shut off on me. Still a head ache.
Christopher, I think your problem sounds different than what we've been discussing. Our cars were not able to be kept running by putting in neutral. All of our electronics shutdown little but little. It was a battery cable issue.
Have the same issue. However, i have a 2018 and shouldn't have to do the battery change and etc. Someone will find out the problem and fix this ishh cause i could have gotten into a bad ass accident. The fact i have read some of the reviews and people still riding around unsafe not aware if there car is going to cut off .. UMMM NO!!!!
I have a 2011 Malibu and it has done it twice this year already. I called gm and asked about a recall but they didn’t have one, so I’m going to try and replace the sensor and of that doesn’t work the cables. It’s scary driving down dark roads not know if my car is going to cut off on me. I live in the country and not call streets have lights.

I am so grateful for this thread bc I almost purchased a Malibu this weekend. This vehicle would not be safe for me and my daughter so I’d like to thank you all for you input. I had no idea that this was an issue and GM out to be ashamed.
My 2015 chevy malibu just completely shut off while driving about 35 down the road, no engine or mntnce lights, just dead. Sat for a few minutes, key wouldnt come out of ignition, wouldnt turn. Finally started for me after an attemt to push us to safety. Scared me and my mom. Just got the car about a week ago. Missed out on a days pay because of it. Car at dealers now. Reading everyones post makes me think i should opt out of this vehicle. What else could possibly go wrong? I hope im not on the freeway next time.
I don’t know if this is going to post twice or not. But I would take it back if u were you, I had a 2011 and it has cut off on my about 4 times this year so I finally traded mines in for a 2015 Honda Accord. I should’ve gotten a Honda in the beginning but oh well.
Christopher, I’m having the same problem with my 2013 Malibu as well I’ve replaced my o2 sensor and camshaft and it’s still doing the same thing have you had any luck with finding a solution?
2017 Malibu LT. When I was at a red light during the Auto Stop featyre my car just died and the engine light came on, after a few tries it thankfully started again. I heard a clicking noise too. I'm going to the dealership tomorrow morning
2016 Malibu LT. I was sitting at red turning light. Car shut off completely.

Can some please tell me what they did to fix this. My 2013 Chevy Malibu has cut off on me while DRIVING on the HIGHWAY! This is crazy that they are not thinking that this should be a national recall. It seems like when I turn my wheel it dies. Power steering included. I can't seem to find an answer just a bunch of people with the same problem. Please tell me what y'all did to fix it.
I have a 2013 Chevy Malibu in which is shutting down driving at slow speeds, took it to Firestone, they said it was the alternator, and since it was a hybrid they cost of parts and labor $1000, got it replace, still doing the same thing, taking it back in
misscoralann answered 5 years ago
They should have tested your alternator before replacing it. I’m sorry to hear that.

According to the top of this tread, replace the battery CABLES.both negative and positive.
Mine has also shut off at a stop light and while reversing into a parking space. It also occasionally has a rattling noise. The post said to try changing the battery cables. Has anyone whose Malibu turned off during slow speeds tried this with success?
I had the same issue three times in a row. I removed in-car camera from the car and have no issues since that time. I also remove a socket which I plugged into the cigarette lighter.
I changed my battery cable and it has never happened again.
I have a 2014 Chevy Malibu. Would not recommend this car to anyone! I've had issues since I bought it! Most recent issue:past week my car died 3x while driving it. About a month before it would act like it could die at a stop light, but never did. Took it to get diagnostic tested and they said the 2 selinoids were bad. We replaced them, so hoping this helps.

it happened to me this morning coming to work at 5 :00 am and its scary because out of no where it just turns off and the steering wheel locks. I turn the key to off and on again and like nothing happened it turns on . I hade that happened to me like twice on the high way uugghhh scary...I did take it to cheverolet company and they wont help me and I cant afford another car write now so I have to continue driving this car. hope to god nothing happens to me with this unsafe car. its crazy it just turns off and locks the steering wheel. be careful if you own a Malibu sound like all Malibu have the same problem and Chevrolet isn't doing anything about it. god bless
Update: I had my car inspected including the battery cables and they were okay. I went to a certified chevy dealership and they stated that it could be clogged fuel injectors, but they're running additional tests today.
My cables "looked fine" as well. The only thing was when they felt them, one felt kind of "spongy". There was nothing they could actually SEE wrong. I had a ton of stuff done and they were certified Chevy mechanics. I had to do a lot of online research and I told them what the problem was. They said they would NEVER have suggested a battery cable problem but that's exactly what the problem was. Get them to change them and your problem will go away. It will not show up in any test they run and you will drain your wallet!
Thank you Terri! When they call me today, I will have them check the cables again and change them. Previously my car was only shutting down when coming to a stop or otherwise driving really slow/ parking. We'll see what happens. Fingers crossed!
I had this problem with my Chevy Malibu 2008 2.4 I fixed it it was a air flow meter
tylermadeent answered 5 years ago
GuruS9DK1 Did you get your problem fix...Are Anyone Whose Had The Problem With The Malibu Shutting Off At A Stop Light Or Stop Or In Reverse....PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU FOUND A SOLUTION
Hi Tylermadeent! I took it to the chevy dealership and they still didn't find any issues after the tests. They did see signs of issues during start up and while driving, but when they tested it again they couldn't replicate the issues. So, they told me that I have to wait for the check engine light to come on and bring it back. Aka they suck. In other news, it hasn't cut off again which is good. This week, I'm also going to take it to firestone or some other shop just to have the battery cables changed (just to be safe) and test what Terri suggested.
Also, online I did find out that the 2013 Chevy Malibu had 9 recalls on it. I will try to see if any of them included my vehicle.
I have a 2010 Malibu, when I leave my house for work or a parking lot at times, after starting the car then turning slowing out of my parking all the power cuts off and the wheel lock up. So I would have to go under the hood and move the red cable on the battery a little bit then the power would come back on. The red cable would be real hot and it looks a little burn from being hot. So i think Terri is right about changing the battery cable. Because it only cuts off during a turn. If your car cuts off while stop at a light or in slow traffic it’s probably a dirty throttle or air filter or etc. I will actually send a update after I replace it.
Chaddwick, everyone I've been in contact with, that changed the cables, have not had another issue! Chevy really needs to recall these and switch the cable!
Hi everyone! Sorry that I took so long for an update. They literally made me drive the vehicle until the check engine light came on. I originally had the issue where my vehicle would turn off when driving slowly to a stop or reversing, but otherwise was okay. It would also hiccup sometimes while driving or take some time to start up. Today, my engine light finally came on and I could get it checked out. It happened to be my CAMSHAFT ACTUATOR. They replaced it and it was covered by some sort of warranty (maybe 100,000 miles). I'm going to pick up the vehicle today to see how it runs. So, if you had issues with hiccups while driving, slow starts, or the vehicle stalling while driving slowly/reversing (no electronic issues with radio, etc.). Then, it's possibly your camshaft actuator. My battery had been tested multiple times and had a almost perfect voltage, etc. They also had looked at the cables previously and said they were fine.
I should also note that whenever my vehicle turned off I would put it in park, turn it off and turn it back on and it would seem as if it never had an issue. So wish me good luck. We shall see.
My daughters 2004 Chevy classic is in the shop. Just got the call that it is a faulty ignition switch causing loss of power feed! They’re charging $330 to get it fixed . We too had changed the battery terminals but it continued to do the same thing. Stalling/dying out at low idle/engine speeds. Hope this helps!!
SuazoMalibu answered 5 years ago
Hello all I was actually having the same issues with my 2013 chevy malibu( the electrical issues). Went to my car first thing yesterday morning and checked the battery since my car had died the previous night and the battery was super hot. Got in touch with my mechanic and he checked out the battery. Everything was perfect but when he got to the cables we discovered it was causing the battery to drain, not allowing i guess electricity to reach other things (in example: The radio, windows, etc.)Will make sure to write any updates incase anything else pops up... keeping in mind i had already paid the chevy dealer over 1 grand to “fix” something that they didn't even fix.
SuazoMalibu - matthe sure that Chevy dealer knows to put a noe in their system about these faulty cables. If they don't start reporting them, Chevy will never issue a recall!
I have a 2017 Chevy Malibu and my car has randomly stopped 3 times while driving with no warning or anything just shuts down and locks up! Everything locks up, someone said to change the battery in the key FOB which I did and it seemed to help....but then just the other day it stopped again, had to have it towed to the dealership. The said it may or maynot be the battery and wanted to charge me $500 for battery/labor.......... I've filed a complaint with the https://www- odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ because this problem should be some type of recall and it's going to get someone killed!! I'm going to take Terri's advice and try to change the cables!
update: tried to order negative/positive cables can only get them through the dealership and they are special order which can take a week or so to get. Terri where did you get your cables from? Did you have that issue? Once we do get, I hope it solves the issue....I certainly appreciate the post about changing the cables out since nothing was found on the diagnostic test.

HERE'S THE FIX: I have a 2013 Chevy Malibu and the car shut down 8 times total. I read this thread and began diagnosing my car. There were 2 times when I noticed it would die. 1. When I went over any pothole, bump in the road, uneven surface. 2. When I went around turns too quickly. My snow tires would cause a rattle and loosen the cable so I thought. Each time I would quickly fix the problem by jiggling the "black" negative cable wire and the car would start right back up. After doing research and checking with 2 mechanics I found that: Chevy Cruze has a manufacturer's defect where they crimped the negative cable causing it to corrode overtime. It started adding more and more resistance to the electricity through to the negative battery cable side. So the whole electrical system suffers. I took it to the dealer who ordered the part the next day and replaced the neg cable wire only. No charge because I just bought the used car 1 week ago. Get a new cable $20 - $28. He showed me the wire and the copper wire had turned from copper color to a corroded greenish color.
I have a 2013 Malibu with all the same problems everyone else is talking about. Car shutting off, radio and dash lights going out, key stuck in the ignition. So I took Terry’s advice and bought the positive and negative battery cables from the Chevy dealer and had them installed. The car worked perfectly for about 2 weeks but unfortunately all of the same problems are back. I don’t know where to go from here short of getting rid of the car. It’s just to dangerous to drive. Chevy needs to recall these cars!
Vallen here I own a 2011 Malibu and it started shutting down while driving around the first of the year, service ecs kept popping up, car would shut down we would shut it off and it would restart. After my car guy looked and ran DX nothing. Finally it did it again and the timing assembly broke, bc of a tiny piece on one of the gears for the timing assembly broke, cause heads and valves to warp and need replacing. 2600$ later and 7 months. Car still shuts off while driving takes it a minute to restart but does it again. My car guy has ran every DX he can on it, replaced the Crank and both intake and exhaust censors and guess what it still shuts off. Chevy States there is no recalls on my make and model that haven't already been fixed. So now my shop bill is another 300$ which I can't keep paying. Chevy needs to realize they have faulty parts and recall the car's.

Christopher My 2011 is doing the exact Same have you found the Solution???
Christopher, i am having the same problem on the same car. it will shut off while im stopped, not all the time though also when its starting up it like stutters a little and often takes a few tries before it actually kicks over .

My 2014 Chevy Malibu is starting to do the same thing where it sputters on start-up rides well for a little. While driving on the highway as well as lower speeds it feels like it wants to shut off. It finally did turn off at a red light, all of the electronics went off, power steering still functioned and the engine light came on. Has anyone other than Terri had continuous successful results after changing the battery cables/posts et. Thank you.
The only difference i have is my electronics dont shut off at all, like everything stays on but the engine

I went to O'Reillys this morning down the street to check out the codes that were being thrown for my 2014 Chevy Malibu. The codes were consistent with replacing the Camshaft Position Actuator. However, with continued research I believe what I would actually need to replace is the Camshaft intake and exhaust solenoids (I couldn't find any single video of anyone replacing just the camshaft position actuator). At this point the engine codes were cleared so I was unable to provide the exact codes. I understand that this thread might be for those who have no codes thrown and the car just dies. I am now waiting to see what will happen first either the car dies before the check engine light comes on or the check engine light comes on. I drove my car today to work about 14 miles and it drove strong. The only change I made was I did fill the tank as the shut off occurred under1/4 of a tank. This might just be a temporary solution and would be interesting to see the lower my gas tank is what complications arise. Either way my wife and kid were in the car when it completely shut off at a red light. Luckily she was able to restart it and make it home safely.

I have a 2016 Malibu car died at red light kept trying to start it back up brakes wheel all locked heard some clicking noise let the car sit for alittle n she started right up after about 25 30 mins what could this be
Well my daughter called me, she has a 2012 Malibu LT and it shut off at a red light. Sat for 20 min with hazards on. Could not press brake or gas. Wheel was locked as well. First time this has happened. It is 27 degrees out and I will ask her how much gas was in the tank. She said it sputtered before died - could be water in tank, but the thing about not being able to get car started again is confusing. 164,ooo on car. Will replace batter cables.
I have a 2013 Malibu and it was shutting off and doing all this stuff y'all are talking about. My husband bought a $79 battery cable and it fixed the problem....for only a few months. Now it's acting up again and turning off when I use my turn signal. Driving one hour to work one way with two kids is nerve racking, they need a solution.
Christopher, im having same issue, has anyone w issues like christopher changed the mass airflow intake censor?? Im being told that is my problem
So disappointed in purchasing a Chevy...first it was the mysterious shut off while driving. As mentioned before, changed the battery cables and battery and that fixed the problem without the help of the dealership. Now, I'm having a "park to shift" error and the car is in park but will not shut off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I bought the cables, both positive and negative but have no put them on yet. The problems seem to be multiple. First the car shut off when my daughter tried leaving the driveway and then did not start again, but would turn over. This happened again while she was out of town some 20 mins and I drove to assist her. I get there and car started right up. It seems her car key was not being recognized by the car. The back up key seems to work fine. While in ignition if your engine with key symbol comes on that means the car thinks it is being stolen and shuts off the fuel. So we use the spare key now. So far does not shut off on her, but now a different problem. Car would not start this morning. Turned over fine. I went to the trunk of the car and tapped on the fuel pump relay switch in the fuse box (yes there are two of them) and vroom, she started right up. So I replaced $25 the relay. Takes less than 1 minute. So far no issues. will let you all know if this fixes it over the next few months. Planning on replacing the cables anyway now that I have them.
My nephew has a chevy equinox and it would not start at times, no power what so ever. It was determined that the aternator cable connected to the starter which in turn is connected to the batter was loose at the connector/knub. cleaned the connector and cable ends, tightened down and no mor loss of power. This may be cause and why when you replace the power cable on the malibu you are cleaning and tightening down on this connector and now it has a consistent contact.
My 2013 Chevy Malibu LS has been shutting off when I stop at red lights, traffic lights, and when I mash my breaks to slow down. Throwing the car in neutral does not always work. My check engine light came on and said it was the mass airflow intake censor. Bought the sensor, got it put on, and the car is still doing the same thing. Battery, starter, alternator, and fuel pump checked out perfectly fine. When I get rid of this car there will be NO more Chevy's for me.
My 2008 Malibu has locked while driving 3 times and the dealership where we got it from wants up to pay them to get it towed . Not even having the car 24 hours when it happened the first time will they come and tow it . Even though we went right back the next day to tell them we didnt want this car they tell us they can fix it but we can't get another car . Ugh im so pissed off !!!! I have my 2 year old my 12 year old and my 17 year old but thank God I had him with me because when it locked up on us right here on Slaton Highway he had 2 help me turn the wheel in to the ditch before we got hit by a 18 wheeler coming fast behind us !!!!
Mine shuts off when im at a stop sign or barely moving. When it rains my air blows hot air also. Anyone know what is wrong. Mine is a 2013 chevy malibu. This isnthe only thing me and my daughters have to drive. Help please i bought reended aomeone the other day because it died when i was coming to a stop. Also my kids burn up when its 89 degrees outside and raining.
Ok so every now and again our Malibu 2012 would shut off. I replaced lead wires to battery. Replaced battery and replaced fuel relay located in trunk. I noticed that if I wiggles the relay it would start. Went in and had them replace rear fuse box. Turns out it had burnt connectors. Driven 60 days no shut offs. And the relay is cool to the touch we’re before it was very warm.
Just happened with my 2011, 55000 miles. At the dealer now and they say it was the timing chain and gears. do I believe this? I am afraid to drive or be in that car

Christopher and everyone else who is having the sputtering stall out on first start , has anyone had luck with this? I feel like it's gotta be something simple like the intake manifold is not properly sealed . I never had this problem with the car not maintaining rpms on intial start up. Until I kept taking on and off the stupid engine cover and as much I try to place it perfectly I never get the stupid thing sitting right. It's always got some wobble to it and for that reason I think the car is struggling to get power because of not being tightly sealed
2019 same problem. First I had a engine power reduced issue and they changed the throttle. I get the car back 1 week later the car shutdown in the middle of road while driving. I had to get it towed back to dealer now they are saying battery needs changing. I have had this car for 5 months. This was a certified pre owned....
My 2012 malibu just cut off while driving I came here and everyone having the same problem.my supervisor had the same problem she said she took the cam sensor off and never had this issue again.
Hello everyone. I just got off another CarGuru conversation where it seems they figured it out. You can check this out before you buy anything for the car. It would seem that the older the car the older the fuel pump and its effort to pass along fuel causes a heat build up with the fuel relay (located in your trunk of the car) on the Body Control Module (BCM) Fancy for fuse box in trunk. I you remove the BCM from the inner wall (not all the way because it is connected with wires) you have enough room to look at the back of the box. Look in the lower corner for a grey wire. If the wire is brown/burnt then your experiencing a poor connection and heat will interfere with the connection to the pump. Many of use have replaced the 20 gauge wire with a 16 gauge and beefed up the old connector with a new one. go to the carguru feed on 2012 Malibu Fuel/Start Issue - ECM?
I have a 2009 Malibu 2.4L ecotec LT2. Same thing happened. No check engine light until I noticed the dash board said Loss of Power, then RPMS shot up and everything shut down. At the time I was 8.5 months pregnant. I had no signs or indication there were problems. After a year and a half of research I decided to change 2 sensors that kept popping up as a possible culprit. MAF and MAP sensor. After picking up the vehicle that would start one time and then wouldn't do anything after one start, I replaced one sensor(MAF) this morning and it fired up, shifted, low idle and no error or check engine light. I would've drove it down the block but it has a flat. It started 6 times in a row with no issues. The mechanic I had keep the car at his home didn't tell me the whole truth and damaged my vehicle AND took the battery I had just put in the year before and never replaced it. It did not start up the night before after 1 go but this morning after 1 sensor replaced, started up beautifully. He said it was the fuel pump but I'm pretty sure the car wouldn't have started at all if that was the case. Replace the small stuff then go big. Cost me $75 for both parts.

I have a 2014 Malibu LTZ same issues as above just shut off while, driving won’t start. Mechanic said I needed a new motor, Sade piston went through block. Guess what it happened again 2 xs after. Then they said I needed a new cam shaft sensor. Still happens. Not sure what to do from here
I have a 2014 Malibu that is also killing on me, once while turning to go around a building, the second time stopped at a traffic light to turn but started right back up and today is the third time stopped at acres light to turn but took numerous attempts to start back up. So scary. This started in February, 2023 with just under 76,000 miles on my car that I purchased brand new, no other owners or drivers. In addition to it killing, in February it start with a rattle noise at cold start up and water pump leaking, and when lift my foot from brake from a stop position it would do like it was ready to kill on me. Prior to my December, 2022 oil change at Service Chevrolet I had absolutely no problems with my car. The only thing that I have had to do with my car is change the oil, fill it with gas and tire repairs and/or replace. Prior to going to Service Chevrolet to change my oil I had been going to a local place. Mistake I will forever regret is going to Service Chevrolet for that oil change. They put 0W-20 oil in my car instead of the 5W-20 the cap on my car and manual call for. They said it's approved oil. Four unbiased mechanics, not Chevy mechanics, have all said that is the worse oil you can put in your car especially down here with the extreme heat we get which seems to make sense since the oil was changed when we had unusually cold weather but in beginning to mid February we had unusually high temperatures starting which is when my nightmare began. Not only did they not put the called for oil, they only put 4-1/2 quarts of oil instead of 5 quarts like it calls for on top of it being a very thin oil. They, shockingly, are denying any wrong doing. This nightmare started less than 6 weeks out from my oil change. When it killed on me while driving the first time the check engine light came on the code was P0010. About three hours or so later I got another code P0011. It was a Saturday so had to wait until Monday. I am down $850.00 already and still doing same thing. They have changed the camshaft position sensor, intake and exhaust solenoids and the gaskets. One mechanic said it wouldn't kill on me again because the gaskets were changed...wrong. This past Wed, April 5, 2023 I brought it to the local shop for them to test the alternator and both batteries because I was noticing the voltage staying at 13.2 and 13.3 while driving, then after stopping and starting it again it went up to 14.1 then kept dropping to 13.3 all while driving, and everything was good on full load. Thursday afternoon I went to start my car and it wouldn't turn over. It kept trying to turn over but wouldn't. I turned the key off waited a second and then started first try like nothing had ever happened. It killed on me today and took multiple times to get it started again. My battery was replaced a year and three months ago. Anyone have any updates, ideas or suggestions? This is my third Malibu I have owned and love them but I think this might be my last. I wish I was in a position to sell and get another one. Please someone update. ALSO, THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT I DISCOVERED, IN ADDITION TO THIS SITE, WHILE RESEARCHING TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY CAR. IF THIS GROUP IS NOT THE ONE THAT STARTED THE LAWSUIT PLEASE JOIN THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. THE LAW FIRM US THE MILLER LAW FIRM AND THEIR NUMBER IS 248-841-2200. ALSO, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE CALL AND FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY IF TRAFFIC AND SAFETY CONTROL AT 888-327-4236. THEY ARE THE ONES THAT RESEARCH COMPLAINTS AND ISSUE RECALLS. Thank you and have a blessed Easter!

Would the negative battery terminal temperature sensor have anything to do with my 2018 Chevy Malibu shutting down randomly? Dealership has not acknowleged the problem since the 3rd of owning it and it shut down, followed by shutting down over 50 times. Pretty scary situations I've encountered. They say if they cannot see the problem on a test drive, they cannot repair it. It's their policy. I said what about the warranty that came with it. They said their policy takes residence. I asked, Why wasn't I told about policy, where is it written? So you sell me a car with a warranty then switch to policy. Isn't that classic bait and switch? They would not answer. I hate car dealers. I wrote to the NHTSA, a complaint, regarding the car randomly shutting down, the park to shift issue as well, and it goes into limp mode every so often. They ruled against me stating the dealer claimed there is no physical proof the car shuts down, even though I had a passenger with me. They said the dealer must witness the issue. It's like asking the wolf if he ate the sheep. Just bummed, bought another car, and cannot sell this one. Thanks.
