what is the intake Manifold?

the engine light came on I had it checked and they said it was the intake manifold. My question is do I need it checked right away?

The intake manifold is where the air go's into the engine. Most likely it's a intake manifold gasket. The gasket is cheap. The labor isn't. But it should be done ASAP.
