sounds like a linkage problem. there is a neutral safety switch or inhibitor switch at the bottom of the steering column. I believe that they can be adjusted so that the vehicle knows it is in park.

Where exactly is the switch?

sorry, not sure on your model, but you can google that part. it could also just be a shift linkage misadjustment.

ashley there should be a spot under the dash where the shifter linkage goes through the fire wall. there may be a torx screw or some kind of set screw. you should be able to put the shifter in a known gear and adjust to that. I would try that before you replace the neutral switch.. after futher research the switch might be right where the linkage hooks to the tranny. This is hard to do in this forum, try to see if there is a youtube vid that shows the adjustment.
I have a 2005 excape changed the neutral switch but when i crank it my cluster shows its going in differant gears but it cranks and gose in gear help
has there been any resolve on this issue? I have a 2005 Escape, 3.0L 2WD, dash shows in D, will not start. Neutral switch has been replaced, still shows in D and engine will not turn over due to it thinks transmission in still in D.
I had the same with my 2005 escape. Always in Drive no matter where the gear shift was. Turned out to the the 10 amp PCM fuse in the engine compartment. Just replaced it and it now shows P when in park. Had a shorted out wire causing it to blow.
