2009 Subaru Outback engine rebuild worth it?

Asked by Geochic Jan 31, 2019 at 02:37 PM about the 2009 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

100%owned. Only 150k miles but we have a
bent piston rod that damaged the cylinders
beyond use. We were quoted $5k for a new
engine.... Is it worth it, or should we put that
$5k towards another used car and sell this to
someone looking for a project? I love it/have
emotional bias. We’ve already put a new
head gasket, alternator, belts, and other
standard wear/tear repairs into it.

I would get a new outback. they are really nice!! plus you will have piece of mind with warranty. I know that would mean that you would now have a car payment but I would think it would be well worth it. and they are starting at $25K which is not a bad price considering trade in and rebates.

I wish! But we can’t afford a new payment yet. My husband needs a short-distance commuter car/fun time ski car.

You could take a chance and install a used engine. Unless you love the car and want to keep if forever it is probably not worth a new engine. The money you spent on the head gaskets is gone with the old engine.

Depends on your budget..... you can't purchase a new car for $5,000...on the other hand.... there's a lot of other stuff that can go wrong... I'd probably advise you to purchase a new Toyota or better yet a Lexus.... Lexus automobiles are probably the best engineered production cars in the world, in my opinion. ....the current Subarus have problems with electronics...sad...

A remanufactured engine would be better than a used engine... my opinion.
