Stuttering 2009 Honda Odyssey
Asked by GuruTNQP8 Jan 29, 2021 at 07:38 PM about the 2009 Honda Odyssey EX FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My Honda 2009 Odyssey stutters when accelerating at 45 and then again 55
or so. No unusual sounds. The stuttering stops when I let off the gas. It
doesn't do it all the time. Seems when I accelerate slowly it does it more
often. Had the plugs and coils done, but no change. Put a gasoline additive
in the tank, no change. They now want to do a valve adjustment but
everywhere I read it talks about sounds, not stuttering. Any thoughts?

Is the Check engine light on? Scan for the trouble code yet?
If not, then it might be related to the transmission and specifically the overdrive.
Thanks for answering. The check engine light has never come on. I thought about the transmission, but it has never been mentioned by the repair shop. I am a woman, always a bit skeptical of repair shops, but they have come with high recommendations from many people. So, I felt they knew what they were doing. They know I am unemployed at the time, and having a valve job and not have the issue resolved would be a very sad scenario for me. Would taking it to a transmission shop for a check up be a good idea? I had a Chrysler van in the past and I could feel the transmission problem. This feels different

scan for codes even if the light ain't on , try an injector cleaner , how's the air filter , what do the plugs look like ?
All those items are good. But I haven't had a scan done. Didn't know you could do that when the check engine light hadn't come on yet. Thanks for your help
Find a local transmission shop with a good reputation, no chain garages and have them test drive it.
Ok, that will be my next avenue. I went to two auto parts stores. Both said if there was no check engine light on there would be not diagnostic information available to the plug-in tool. Someone mentioned it might be a CV joint on the axel. Whatever that is. Thank you for your advice!
In case anyone was wondering... it was a valve adjustment that fixed the problem. Thanks again for all the input!

You could try shutter fix by lubriguard. Sometimes the torque converter can get a glaze build up on it causing it not grip good when it goes in lockup. This can cause a shuttering problem. For about $10 you can put a 2oz tube of shutter fix in transmission and if problem is fluid related it should help it. It has helped mine after using it.
So, I mentioned that the valve job fixed the problem, but it didn't. I was told there was a bulletin out about a computer upgrade (?) for the transmission. They suggested I go to the dealer for the computer thing and also have a transmission flush. Honda said they were aware of the problem but it wasn't a recall and it would be $350.00. Sheeseh. $1500 into a van worth $3500.

The shutter fix may be worth a try. Also when i got my odyssey i had a similar problem of vibration when i would axcelerate while on the highway, when i let off the accelerator it would smooth out. Believe it or not it was the front tires out of balance. Since i had them balanced it has not done that any more. Just another inexpensive thing to try first.
OK! Shutter Fix is on the shopping list today. I'll keep you posted! Thank you!
