I have a 2009 VW Passat 2.0 L Turbo. What would cause a gasoline motor to
sound like a diesel when idling?

Best guess would be check the timing on it cause they are real bad for having failed tensioners that cause pistons and valves to hit. There is a remanufactured part to replace the original design. Should do this regardless cause it's a 3500 dollar repair and it will happen
