How would I know if it's the compressor I have to change or I just have to buy freon for my caprice car. Ac is not working properly

Just put feon in. If it were the compressor, it wouldn;t blow air
The compressor doesn't blow air the compressor moves the freon in a completely sealed system. It leaves the compressor as a warm gas comes through the condensor and turns into a hot liquid goes through the valve that has many different names depending on the setup. When it leaves the valve its an ice cold liquid it enters the evaporator and leaves the evap as a Luke warm gas it enters the compressor and starts its journey all over again. Unless you are certified to work on air conditioning systems don't work on it. Take it to a certified tech, its against the law to let freon into the air and if you have a leak and add freon then you are wasting time money and destroying the ozone. If a part needs to be replaced then itwill end up in a shop to be evacuated and refilled. If it doesn't get evacuated then you will have again wasted money by putting freon into the vehicle.
What baloney. Unless the freon escapes in a closed room no harm no foul. Try the freon it usually solves the problem and its cheap. But you may have to replace it frequently if the cooling system is getting older and on its last legs.
It is against the law for a reason and having to constantly add means there is a leak. People like you are the reason we have a hole in the ozone. http:// en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorofluorocarbon .
No to constantly add can also mean its old and suffering from wear and tear. You add to save on the replacing it until it stops running at a functional level. Save the tree hugger tantrums. No one but no one has physically gone up to measure the ozone layer, ozone is so 90's. The environmentalists are the reason prices are out of sight, gas is close to 4 bucks a gallon, food prices are high because there is not enough corn to feed the livestock or the people because its all in the gas tanks. Its why people are poor and out of work. Face it, the closest you've been to an older car was sitting in a car seat in one. Reading a repair manual and looking at diagrams is not experience. It's better to be silent and thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt. Go sit in the corner you need a time out.
rubie...it doesnt just vanish "cause its old"....it means theres a damn leak somewhere.
Adding freon isn't going to fix anything, you have a leak, and if there is air in the system it won't help. You have to find the leak, fix it, then use a freon exchange machine to evacuate the air from the system and create a negative pressure then fill it with freon and some ac oil. Unless you have your own shop, you should take it to a mechanic.
