What is causing my 2010 Corolla stereo to make these crazy noises?

The stereo on my 2010 Toyota Corolla all of a sudden started making crazy static/distortion/bit-crushed noises. It only starts if I push the volume past 25-28 and then to stop it I have to turn the volume all the way down and then slowly bring it back up. It seems to be particularly sensitive to bass so I keep the bass all the way down.
