2010 Camry Oil Consumption issues AGAIN!
All maintenance only on my 2010 Camry LE since day one of purchase in
Sept 2019 has been at the same Toyota dealership. I first had an issue at
46,000 miles after purchasing my car brand new. (Car wouldn’t start, had it
towed to dealer, they said they couldn’t find a problem, I refused to come get
it until they did!) Replacing the 'short block' in the engine was covered under
warranty so I was thrilled. At the time I had no idea that the problem was
related to the infamous oil consumption issue.
At approx 100,000 to 115,000 miles I began having issues again and was
told it was due to low oil, older cars burn more oil, need to have oil checked
more often at 3,000 vs 5,000 miles, etc. I asked why the Oil light never goes
on and the reply was "yeah, that's weird." I'm sure this is a familiar story to
you all.
The latest incident was in Oct 2018 when I had engine problems again; just
2 months after having an oil in change in August 2018 I was down 2 quarts!
This was at approx 125,000 miles. This time I was told about the oil
consumption problem, had 2 quarts put in free of charge, was asked to
return at 1300 miles for consumption test. I was told replacing the short
block probably needed to be done, but it was no longer under warranty. I
reminded the Tech that the short block had been replaced before at 46,000.
He was surprised and checked my electronic record to confirm. He told me
in the past only certain Toyotas with certain VIN #s were covered. Also told
me that since I had driven over 50,000 on the NEW short block, that one was
no longer under warranty! OK, so what they are saying is if anyone buys a
Toyota they should expect to have at least 3 different short blocks during the
life of car?!!!! I’m currently waiting for a call back on the consumption test
today. Wish me luck!
