2010 Suburu Forester smoking under hood

Asked by Upthespiral Feb 01, 2016 at 04:59 PM about the 2010 Subaru Forester 2.5 X Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

After mountain driving, since this is where I live, I noticed a smoking coming
from under hood.. Left passager side just under the engine. Looks like a oil
leak. It's not dripping on the ground barely there but enough smoke like its
burning off..
I checked the oil dip stick it is full. My coolant fluid is very low.. Note I just had
the oil changed andfluids topped off days ear!ier.
It ru s great , no indicator lights on.
Could this be something simple?
I'm worried its a head gasket
I see white smoke out of the exhaust. I really can not tell if it smells sweet or
like oil.

Low coolant, oil leaks and white smoke spells head gasket. Get it checked out as it sounds like it does not have long until you have a really serious problem.

my 04 seeps oil onto the exhaust manifold but isn't any worse than that (occasional smoke from under the hood). I am with FoR.. could be HG. If it runs good, keep it that way, get it fixed now before it overheats and really costs you big.

I believe the '10 Forester still used the same older 2.5i of the 2000-2009 Legacy/OB. If so, then yes, you've probably blown the left head's gasket. Sorry.... Get BOTH sides done, with new t-belt and proper machine shop service, in the $1600-1800 range. IGNORE the water pump...they're ALWAYS good. And if you replace the t-stat make sure it's a Subaru OEM, not smaller orifice aftermarket.
