Did I just ruin my car (failed oil change)?

Asked by Gadzala09 Oct 21, 2017 at 01:38 AM about the 2010 Nissan 370Z Touring

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I have a 2010 Nissan 370z. Synthetic oil changes are quite expensive so
I thought i'd tackle it on my own this time. Turns out I had a faulty oil filter
(double checked with the guy at the store and it was the correct one for my
model) and after completing my oil change I went to start my car and oil
came spilling out from the oil filter which wasn't correctly screwed on. It was
probably on for 8-10 seconds (it didn't move) before I realized the oil was
pouring out and turned it off.

I ended up getting another filter from another manufacturer, this one installed
correctly and there was no leaks/lights. What I'm afraid of is the fact that for
8-10 seconds the car was idling with no oil in the car (or very little since it all
poured out through the gap between the loose oil filter). Could this have
damaged my car? It's running fine now but I'm just not sure of long term
effects.

I would say that if this happened and the engine ran at idle for up to 30 seconds there would be no damage. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

should be fine if it was just a few seconds. most of the problems you would get from that would be instant or you would know in a day or two. Most of the time if the block actually got too hot or no lubrication it would just seize up and never turn over again but you would have to run it for like 10+ minutes with no oil for that to happen
