Hatchback will not open

This is a common problem with this car, get inside the back and you will see a plastic cover at the bottom of the hatch door, remove it and the it will expose the door latch; try to move it to the right to release it. The problem is with a plastic knob that is supposed to move down to allow the latch to operate but gets stuck in the upper position. Some times, after you do this, it starts working again, for a while and then the condition comes back. I suggest that you replace it to avoid the annoyance.
What if the plastic mechanism has fallen apart and moving the lever to the right does nothing? Is there any other way to manually open the hatch so the rear panel can be removed and the entire mechanism replaced?
