Can placing too much coolant i the resevoir cause damage to vehicle

My husband placed too much coolant into the reservoir, after driving for 20 minutes we received a message to shut engine off. Was the excess coolant to blame

No, once the engine gets warm, if it is too full it will just spit out, engine coolant system can only hold so much, can't over fill it.

Too much coolant -- engine not overheating and still I get the "Shut down Engine, check coolant"
