Nissan Versa will not start or even react to key in ignition

Asked by Carmen_H Apr 04, 2017 at 01:09 AM about the 2010 Nissan Versa 1.8 S Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello all,
My Versa didn't want to start up today. At first inserting the key and turn part
way lit up the dash lights and turned on the radio, however turning the rest of
the way to start the car had no reaction whatsoever, not a single noise, or
click or even attempt to crank. This has happened before, I usually just
remove the key, wait about 1 minute then start the car without a problem.
However, this time the car did not start, even after waiting. I tried to jump the
car thinking the battery might be the problem (it is about 5 years old now) but
nothing happened, not even the dash lights or radio came on when the key
was half-way turned. I would be grateful for any advice to begin diagnosing
the problem, I'm strapped for cash but halfway handy with tools and general
fixing things. Thanks.

make sure the batt. terminals are clean and snug , scan for codes even the light ain't on , look for any loose or worn wires , check the main fuses , the on going problem may have toasted one , let us know what happens

Did you ever figure this out? I'm having the same problem

I would check the starter. When the brushes get worn they don't make contact when worn short and the the quick try makes an arch and contact and continues to turn the starter over. I would say the brushes are totally gone now.

Yea, I surf often, and I would take my key with me in the water. Turns out you shouldn't take a key with an electronic chip for a swim. I guess the chip went bad then the ignition couldn't recognize it so wouldn't start the car as a safety feature, at least that is what was explained to me. A few months later I also found my positive battery terminal was slightly loose.

Hey! My 2010 Nissan Versa is doing the same thing tonight and did it about 2 months ago. At first I thought the car just wasn't in hear properly because the person who finally came to help me got it to start in Neutral. This time though, that doesn't work, we checked all over and the main fuse box, even tried boosting It, and it's still dead in the water. Anyone hear of why this seems to be a trend? Thanks!

There is a fuse on the battery terminal that is often overlooked.

So my gf has the same problem, 2012 versa hatchback. The car wont start usually in the am coz of the cold, and we found out a way, we usually put pressure on the computer module in the hood, and then coila the engine turns on. Been working for 1 year, and now all of a sudden, we could tell that ut was getting worst. Just yesterday, all of a sudden the engine stopped while we were stalled in a parking garage, and restarted all over again by itself and it was really scary... its a 2012 .. its just crazy how its not just us having this issue

My 2010 Versa would not start Saturday. I had just turned it off 5 minutes earlier and when I went to restart it, the key would not turn the ignition on/over. It was like the steering wheel was locked but it was not. We tried later Saturday to get it to start and nothing. The key was reacting with the door locks though. We could hear them clicking when we tried to start the car. We tried again on Monday with our extra key, thinking maybe the key was worn and still nothing. As a last ditch effort, we connected the battery cables and hooked the Versa up to my other car. It started right up. We assumed that it was the battery so we went and had it checked. The battery and alternator both tested excellent. What is causing this?

I have a 2016 nissan versa hatchback and it just cranks but it wont start people said it was my fuel pump but then i even sprayed starting fluid in my air cleaner thinking it would start but it wouldnt even fire on that. Anyone have any ideas on wat it could possibly be?

Same problem here. 2012 hatchback. I suspect possibly the neutral safety switch. Fuel pump unlikely although there is a loss of power on the highway.

Ok so I have a 2012 Nissan versa hatchback and I was having problems. It just wouldn't start at times. It would run great but it would start then five minutes later it wouldn't. Lights in car would turn on and radio. It was so weird and nobody in my family knew what was going on. I took it to auto zone and they told me it was the starter. I took old starter out and put in a new one. I thought I had the problem fixed. But the next day I try to turn on my car and it wouldn't start. SAME PROBLEM. I was so frustrated. Finally I took it to a mechanic and he gave me the answer. IT WAS MY KEY. He told me every key with a black cap on it has a chip inside. If the chip inside isn't working right your car won't start. It's a security measure that the car has. I opened up the key cap and sure enough the chip had fallen put of place. I got a new key and no more problems.

The exact same thing is happening to me. Same car. Mechanics don't know.

the solution is: change the brake ligth switch see photo attached...that switch is the main cause

What if the 2016 Nissan versa does not have a chipped key would it still the brake light switch causing the vehicle not to crank over at all

That's a good question. If you have to push the brake to start the car, I would say yes, that is the main cause. If you don't need to push the brake to start the car...well you would have to keep looking for a solution. The brake light switch function is to send a signal to the main computer and the starter motor so they "know" is safe to start the car (beacuse you are pushing the brake).

So the issue I'm having with my 2015 Versa Note, is that I can put the key in the ignition, and no matter where it turns, I get no response from the radio, dashboard, windows, or anything. The car just sits there and beeps notifying you the key is in the ignition, even with the key turned forward. Any help at all would be appreciated

Here's my issue: I first get in and turn the key, I can hear the click of the solenoid but no start or crank. I can then leave the key in the ON position for a few seconds and then it will start right up. Drives fine with no issues., Any ideas?

There are several reasons for why the car won't start but let's start with the cheapest option - with your own key fob - by changing the battery in the key fob (in mine - 2015 Note it needs CR1620 battery) and reprogramming the key fob by yourself. When you open it take a look to make sure there's no corrosion or oxidation inside. You can use electronics cleaner. Why make dealers rich! There are videos on youtube on how to reprogram your keyfob and how to change the battery: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCQSKTxhir4. If no luck with the original one then you can buy the key fob on ebay, cut it (duplicate) at the hardware store and reprogram it.

I had a similar issue with my 2008 Nissan versa. I thought battery was fried, but it passed with flying colors. The culprit? The shifter wasn't properly set in the park position, even though it seemed like it was. Try jiggling the shifter around, up, left, right to set it in park. This was happening more and more and each time I play with the shifter and pushed it up and to the left, it started up perfectly. If that doesn't solve it, try starting from neutral.
