Ticking Noise When In Drive. Transmission?

Asked by mlreggie Jul 24, 2015 at 02:02 PM about the 2010 Ford F-150 Lariat SuperCab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2010 F150 Lariat. Just about a week ago I noticed a ticking noise. This noise occurs when the truck is in drive and 20 minutes after driving. It doesn't occur when sitting idle or revving up the engine.

When you set the brake on, put the truck in drive and rev up to about 1000 RPMs consistently, the ticking noise occurs.

Would be extremely grateful a diagnosis and/or remedy.

Could be a wheel bearing or other suspension issue. Or any other part which rotates when the vehicle is actually in motion and not standing still.

You need to get the truck off the ground and spin the wheels by hand, then spin them in drive to find out where the noise is coming from. But since you said you put the truck in drive and applied both gas and brake it sounds like it's going to be a transmission gear or bearing.

Did you ever get an answer? My 2009 5.4L is doing the same thing. I suspect it's the transfer case because it gets worse when I'm in 4x4. It must be a common problem because I can hear other f150 doing it when they go by.

It was the right manifold. It had a crack and I needed to get it replaced. Apparently, it's common on Fords.
