Engine starting issues

Asked by Guru9N7SL Aug 17, 2020 at 01:28 PM about the 2010 BMW X5 xDrive30i AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A few weeks ago, my X5 started acting up while trying to start the engine; it
takes now two to three attempts depressing the start button to make this
happens; once it does, it will work normally and will have no sudden shut offs
or any other issue. It starts when it cranks, but first or second try I can only
hear a click (in the starter area, I can't assure it is). I know it is not the battery
or fuel, and it will not throw any codes or warning messages. Any
suggestions?

It sounds like it may not be getting enough fuel the first time around, requiring subsequent attempts to start. Are you able to check fuel pressure while cranking? There should be a schrader valve on the fuel rail where you can attach a fuel pressure gauge. Hook that up, crank it, and see what it says. If it's low, this is most likely a failing/failed check valve in the fuel pump.
