Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The traction control light is staying on on my 2012 ram truck. The abs light is NOT on but the shop is telling me that there is 3 parts to the abs that need to be replaced at a cost of 1900. dont understand why the abs light is not on if the abs is that messed up. Does this sound right or is the shop wrong? I've had it in trice before for a speed sensor which turns on the traction control light. Thats what I was expecting this time but no they say its the abs.

What are the codes and what parts do they tell you need replacing?

I don't know what the codes are and I cant remember which parts. I think one was the abs module. The other 2 parts are together. They said they could replace one and if it doesn't fix it then they could replace the other but if they change both together there would only be one labor charge. They're installing a trailer brake controller. I told them not to do anything with the abs. I'm sure they'll charge me for the diagnostics so when I get the truck back I'll make sure I get a print out of it

Does the ABS light come on when you start the engine? It should for a few seconds as a bulb check. If not, the bulb is probably burned out. The ABS and traction control systems work together. So it's very unusual that the ABS light will be off but the traction control system light is on. I'd get a second opinion. Hope that helps! Jim

The abs light does come on when you turn the key on. It goes out as soon as the truck starts. This truck only has 40,000 miles. I think I will get a second opinion. I cant see that much being wrong with it. I could see damage to the wiring as it sits a lot and we do have a lot of squirrels. I think when I get it back, I'll look under the hood and under the truck for any chewing. If I cant find anything I'll probably swap the speed sensors out and then if its still on I'll take it to another shop if I cant fix it myself. Hopefully with a little advice I can deal with it. I always did my own repairs till I started buying new and then they have the extended warranty so I let them fix it and I got lazy. I'm done buying cars so I think it's time to go back to fixing them myself.
