Can I change the axel ratio and keep the warranty

Asked by smqrs Jul 06, 2020 at 11:39 AM about the 2010 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am looking to change the axle ratio on this truck from 3.21 to 3.92, so that my
towing ability is increased.  I realize that the sticker that is on the truck will not
change, but I am expecting that I will get a greater towing capacity which will
be safer and better than stretching the truck to what is the current limits.

The truck only has 10,000 miles on it, and I am looking to maintain the
warranty on both the new truck bumper to bumper, as well as the powertrain
warranty.  I have asked the service advisor at a local dealer, and they said they
don't know how to do this, and reprogram the transmission and other related
things to recognize the change made.

help please.  I just bought this, thinking that the travel trailer we would buy
would fall within the towing capability, but it is at the edge of the limits.  I really
don't want to go through the hassle of selling this one and getting another, and
I also don't want to be driving a 2500 around town, as that would be overkill for
my normal driving need.

My truck is a 2019, 1500 Classic, Warlock with a 5.7L engine, 4X4, and tow
package installed.  The related car info would not offer me the year that it is, so
I put it here in the text.  Vin # 1C6RR7LT9KS729205

Contact Ram and ask them if the dealer can't answer your question. I would not tell them you plan on towing a heavy trailer. If you exceed the rated weight they will have all the excuses they need to deny you coverage.
