Nissan Titan smoking on start up
Asked by Shannon Jun 13, 2021 at 05:26 PM about the 2010 Nissan Titan LE Crew Cab
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My Titan smokes white smoke upon start up and
uses oil. Mechanic changed the pcv valves,
cleaned the head and valve covers and it still
smokes. Compression check was fine.. He is now
telling me that it must be a piston ring issue and it
would be more cost effective to just buy a used
engine or sell the truck. Any suggestions?

Also it runs fine other than the smoke and the need for oil. Has 180,000 miles on it.
Leaking head gaskets? I think it is time for a new truck or at least a rebuilt engine.
Sounds like bad valve guide seals to me. Does it also smoke at idle but not when you're driving down the road? If so it's definitely the valve guide seals. Hope that helps! Jim
As far as I can tell it only smokes when started. And I miss typed it only has 150000 not 180...not that it matters. Thank you all for your help.
You're welcome. Glad to help! Jim
If the engine does not use significant amounts of oil and you can live with the smoke then keep driving it. A heavier oil might be in order.
I had this problem, big puff of blue smoke when started, and it was leaking a lot of oil. Had the valve cover gaskets replaced, stopped smoking and I am not exactly sure why. Also , this truck has 375,000 miles.
