Systems of this type have always failed to work when the lens gets dirty. if you have light controls not working, you need to know the components in your system, locate and inspect them for obvious problems before assuming things need replacing. you can ask for help at your service department, seems like a often heard question they are supposed to answer without looking, just tell you where. some I have seen were in sunlight, some were facing oncoming lights, I would want to read up on it and its other similar systems.

For instance, a sunload sensor for climate control ? a sentinal (day/night photocell type) overlap of parts or differentiating parts can be important.
