Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2011 jeep grand cherokee laredo /
5.7 Hemi
cranked up and battery light came
on ... started to drive away and it just
died .. completely dead, no power at
all.  Had a slight odor of rubber
burning so assumed it was the
alternator and replaced it with a
brand new one,  got it bolted up and
plugged in with ground wire in place.
Hooked the battery back up and no
power at all .. not even dome light.
cant put it in neutral, cant roll
window up or down ... this thing is
dead.  And i cant check the voltage
on the battery cuz i dont have a
voltmeter.
Any ideas what my problem is ??

Come on, if you can't or won't do testing, how are we supposed to help you? I've used volt meters and test lights since I was a kid and I'm 74. A test light doesn't cost much, hell, I'd go to town and buy you one, if we lived close enough. Have you tried a battery charger--jump box--or jumper cables? Anybody you can call that has a test light or digital multimeter? Hey, I'm just trying to help, work with me, a little. If I sounds cranky, haven't had my morning coffee, yet. I'm working on it. lol

where's the main fuse ? ... nothing is burnt and i dont have an ignition, its push-button start

no fuses are blown .... got someone to jump start with cables and all the interior will work, .. dash, lights, windows but will not turn over .. just clicks. I'm thinking the battery on the jumper wasnt strong enough. After i took the jumper cables off it went dead again ... completely, no lights or nothing. Dead battery ??

whats a preset saver ? ... and whats a OBD2 port ? you said do this before disconnecting main power ... ?? main power ?? .... you mean removing both terminals from the battery and pulling battery out ? that would define disconnecting main power ??

REPLACED THE BATTERY WITH A BRAND NEW ONE ($225) AND CRANKED IT UP. EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE WORKING FINE. SO I GUESS WHEN THE ALTERNATOR WENT OUT IT CAUSED A DEAD CELL IN THE BATTERY BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT HOLD A CHARGE. THANKS EVERYONE (ESPECIALLY G A) FOR GIVING ME INSIGHT AND HELPING ME WITH THIS.

i had no idea it could do that .. and i had no symptoms from that bad battery either ... wow, good to know ... thanks again
