Water Pump

Asked by Tim Feb 06, 2017 at 08:43 AM about the 2011 BMW 3 Series 328i xDrive Sedan AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

In the next couple of weeks I am going to be driving from Pennsylvania to Tennessee to visit my daughter. I have a 2011 BMW 328xi with 90,000 miles on it. I have heard a lot of stories about the water pump on these models being a weak point. Should I replace the water pump prior to my trip? I don't believe it has ever been changed.

If you haven't had any issues I would make the trip and do the replacement when you return.

I would suggest to test it first. you can do that by turning the ignition on but the engine off, turn the heat settings to the highest (84f) , the fan speed on the lowest, press the gas pedal for 10 seconds, you will hear the water pump noise running, you can check the water reservoir (car must be cold), and you should see the water circulating. if there was any problem, the water will not circulate.
