On most cars you take a 3/8' or 1/2" square drive wrench and torque the tensioner to loosen while slipping the belt off one of the smaller pulleys. Don't allow the tensioner to slam back and break. Look for a belt routing diagram sticker to reinstall the new belt correctly. You could also sketch or take a picture of the old belt's pattern. Also make sure the belt is centered in the groves properly on all the pulleys. Remove your wrench. Carefully start the engine and look at how smoothly the belt runs in the pulleys.
